I have a Gateway2000 G6233 PII 233mhz. I am wanting to add more RAM without paying the Gateway price. I know they are proprietary, but I am unsure how deep this effects my ability to upgrade without going through them. My question, Is the RAM installed in my machine proprietary or can I buy more from a local shop in town? For the record, Gateway wants $149. for a stick of 64megs!!!! I'll build a new machine first! Thanks for any help.

I upgraded a Gateway with standard memory once, and it worked great, but it was after they dropped the 2000 and became just Gateway. I don't know for sure if the memory is proprietary, but in this machine, I think about a P-333, it worked without any problems.
Check the documentation with the computer, or check their website, they might have some info posted. A call to a local computer shop might get you some good info too, many times they will answer a quick, simple question of this type, but try not to hit them with really technical stuff, like how do I install another hard drive...

Pete is right, check your documentation and phone a local computer shop. No guarantee implied here, but maybe a little hope for you - I've used standard, non-parity 32-pin simms on 3 Gateways (2 P-90s & 1 P-100) and it worked just fine. As I recall, the technical reference manual for the Gateways I worked on stated they would accept either parity or non-parity simms installed in pairs, which is why I suspected I could use non-Gateway RAM in them. Since those machines are significantly older than yours,I think there's a good chance you'll be able to upgrade with non-proprietary memory. <fingers crossed http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/smile.gif>

Ok, here you go.
Your G3 233 should have 4 mem slots capable of a max of 256mb of 60ns memory. This memory does need to be installed in pairs. Below are some compatable Viking part #'s.

Go to Crucial/Micron's Web site (http://www.crucial.com/) and select your computer from the series of upgrade options posted where it says "Select system to upgrade." Whatever they give you is guaranteed to work, and guaranteed to be a killer price. ALWAYS use Crucial!

Thanks alot for the info. I cannot believe the 100 dollar price difference between local shops and Gateway! That crucial.com is a pretty good site. Thanks again
