My HP InkJet printer that I've had for a couple of years went bad today. So, tomorrow I'm going to buy a new one. My question has to do with the cartridge. Since I've had this printer, I've had good luck re-filling the cartridge instead of buying a new one every time. I think I've read somewhere that some of the new printers that are being manufactured will simply stop working once the cartridge runs out of ink and re-filling will not do any good. If this is true, I want to stay away from such a printer. Does anyone know if this is true? If so, which printer is now made that way? Thanks

Lexmark printers have a chip inside, they even sued a re-filler under DMCA law.

HP cartridges have a expiration chip that makes the cartridge stop working after a certain time period.

Also note that the lower price on a new printer is sometimes accompanied by the removal of ink cartridges or cables! Also many new printers only work with processors of particular speeds, so read the specs carefully.

Laser printers are more expensive initially but they usually run cheaper as they use dry toner instead of liquid ink.

Today I bought a HP 3930. The color cartridge was included but the black was not. But the printer was only $35.00 and I bought a black cartridge for $14.00. So the total cost was not that much. It does only printing--that is it's not a scanner and copier combined, but I don't need a scanner or copier. It came with the power cable but not a USB cable, but since I already have the USB cable, that was no problem. So just a basic printer is all I need. I'm satisfied with it. I printed a greeting card for our granddaughter's birthday, and the color was great! The paper-tray isn't that great--you can't put much paper in it. For my personal use at home, that's not too big of a problem.

Apart fron the D series and the 7100 Series printer none of the printers use the TIJ-3 technology. Now these models are pretty old and they are AIO's (Officejets) to be precise. On these units the printer would stop working if the expiry date of the catridge expires !! Since you are going to buy a deskjet you won't be having any problems, and HP do not restrict cust from refilling the catridges, but they won't give u free support if you are using a refilled catridge even if you are in warranty.

Most of the new printers from HP comes with a new technology called as GEN-2, which prohibits customers from using catridges purchased from a different ZONE or country !! eg : if u purchase a printer from US and if you buy the catridges from INDIA. ur printer would reject the catridge which u have purchased from INDIA. If you call up the tech supprt they will unlock the printer for u, but then again u will have to continue using the catridge which has been purchased from INDIA. Like wise u can reset the printer 3 times after which your printer gets locked to the last Zone u selected. Once its been locked there's nothing much you can do, u will have to stick on with the last ZONE.

This is not applicable for Mobile printers like the photosmart 145, 245, 375 etc, which works with just one catridge..

Go in for the HP printer, its worth the money u spend !! :)

they use the VIVERA Ink technology, if you use the right Photopaper ie; the HP one, you can keep that printout fade resistent for 116yrs :) the papers are made up of 6 layers of materials .
