I have a little program that can fix this problem by lowering your MTU and with it you can also tweak your TCP receive window. The program is DRTCP and you can get it here (http://www.dslreports.com/front/drtcp.html) it's free. I have DSL but my ISP doesn't use PPPoE so I don't worry about my MTU.

I think Windows XP and Microsoft use more of my bandwidth than I do!

FIRST thing I did when I got XP connected was go to dsl reports and get DRTCP and tweak out my connection (VERIZON)
and there when you run the "Tweak test" after clicking results you get:
Raising MTU from 1480 with WinXP, using *built in* PPPoE connection software. (#2252) A: As of 10/15/01, there is no way known to raise MTU in WinXP from 1480. This issue is seen only by WinXP users who are connecting with the built in PPPoE connection software. If you change to RASPPPoE <http://user.cs.tu-berlin.de/~normanb/>, your MTU should then default to 1492. RASPPPoE is popular, free, and less problematic than WinPoet (another choice).
This small difference (12 bytes) in MTU is negligible however, and should cause no concern. Check back from time to time though for a "fix".
I have not had any problems with VERIZON or winXP and I am aware that there's a "patch" from M$ but have not tried it as I really do not trust it (involves a lot of registry changes)
my current MTU is 1480.

what do you mean- you don't have ppoe so you don't "worry about my MTU" ??
you need to worry about your MTU no matter what type connection you have- are you saying that yours is set (in winXP) to 1492 ??????

Now that is slow average downloads start @ 7kb/sec then after ten seconds drop to about 3kb/sec.
Thanks,

Well, that is one less thing I'll have to worry about with XP...since Verizon is planning on bringing DSL to my area about the same time hell freezes over http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/rolleyes.gif...but it is good to know any way, thanks for the link hiredgoonz.
