Hey there. My question is about setting up the network. Well, really about having to RE-setup the network everytime I reboot. I'm using a Linksys on a dsl connection. Laptop is wi-fi and the desktop is hard wired to port 1. Now, I run the network wizard, and it set's up the network and the internet connection is fine. Network connections window now has the LAN (NIC) and the new Internet Connection listed. All is fine, internet is up and running. Reboot. Now network connections window just has the LAN. The Internet connection that I just created is gone. No internet on the desktop.
Now the router is still sending wi-fi to the laptop and it works fine there but I have to RE-setup the network on the desktop again. Done and all is good until the next reboot.
WHY??? It's driving me nuts. Thanks for the help guys!

When I right click on My Network Places, it takes me to Network Connections.
In Network Connections I have two, Internet Gateway and LAN.
Once I reboot and come back, the Internet Gateway (Internet Connection-by name) will be gone.

The problem is, if you have a router, you have NO NEED for an internet gateway.
Internet-->Cable/DSL Modem-->Router-->PC

So I should set up the network as though the internet connection were going right to the pc then?

yeah, the physical router is your gateway...

Okay, so instead of "connection this computer through a residential gateway to the internet" option in the setup wizard, I selected "this computer connects directly to the internet" and clicked next and it yelled at me saying that I cannot set it up that way because the internet connection is shared.
So, then I tried the "other" option and selected the "this computer connects directly to the internet through a network or hub" and went through the rest of the setup process and it didn't add anything to the "Network Connections" folder. I rebooted and it still didnt' work.
I can only get the desktop on the network by setting up the network as "this computer connects to the internet through another computer on the network or through an internet gateway". Then it's all good..., until I reboot...
