Mostly a matter of preference, really, both have recieved good reviews, the benchmarks show a bit of difference here and there, but once you get past about a 400MHz CPU I doubt if you'd notice a difference in performance without sensitive instruments to measure it, I don't think human senses can discern the difference in milliseconds it takes to open a program...
About the only thing I've noticed is that I've seen some problems in the forums with AMD's, and almost none with Intels, and with AMD's you sometimes have to install drivers to make the things work at all. Otherwise, it's mainly personal preference. Some people swear by Intel, others think AMD is the only way to go...I like Intel myself, after all, they originally invented the CPU...even if they are a bit more expensive, they have always done well, and are more widely supported by motherboard manufacturers.
Check around on the net for some sites that post reviews and benchmarks, I have a few links at my site that may have articles in that area.

Hafta chip in here with a good word for the Duron. I've had no problems whatsoever with mine, and the price difference relative to the PIII is huge. Socket A motherboard availability did used to be a problem, but not really anymore, with good, reasonably cheap name-brand mobos from people like Gigabyte.

I personally recommend the Duron as it gives the best bang per buck.
