Welcome to http://www.pcguide.com/ubb/pcgubb.gif forums.

My basic system is:

Intel Celeron Processor 2.8 ghz or AMD Sempron 1.8 ghz
512 MB RAM
80 Gb hard drive
CD-RW
On Board Video
On Board Sound
On Board LAN
350-400 Watt Power supply
PS-2 Keyboard
4 USB ports (6 preferred)
PS2 Optical mouse
Windows XP Professional

Remember, this is not my ideal system. It is the blue print for a basic home PC to do word processing and light internet browsing.

I'd acctually say, for a basic Home user how will not be networking, that XP Home would be a decient OS. TFL, if you are looking for suggestions, post your budget and we can give you a hand. Also. . .Welcome to the PCGuide!

Indeed, it would help to know your budget and it would help if you would further clarify what tasks you have in mind (e.g. emailing, browsing, gaming, etc.) for a "decent" home computer.

I humbly disagree. I will NOT sell a system with XP home edition. If you are on the internet, your on a network. It's worth the extra money to get pro edition.

I thought it only really provided extra networking safty and capability. . .I've never acctually used it though. I run Pro on my System. Any ways, I'll have to remember that for future use. . .

Comparisons at http://www.annoyances.org/exec/show/article10-002 and http://www.winsupersite.com/showcase/windowsxp_home_pro.asp

Whilst I agree that "if you are on the internet, your on a network" I don't see why this opens one up to additional vulnerablities in that area. My reading of the increased security for XP pro was that it related to multi-users accessing the PC either as a standalone or on a small LAN - but I'm open to being further educated.
