Just had a phone call from my wife at home: the computer died on her. She was doing a file search and the screen went blank and the computer went quiet. She tried switching off and back on with the master switch at the back but no joy. She says when she switches the unit on, the USB DSL modem power light comes on.
I am at work at the moment so cannot see, hear or try anything. I am looking for ideas on where to look when I get home, but suspect some part of the PSU may not be functioning. Is this a reasonable assumption as the USB is powered but not the disks or cooling fans?
Thanks.

Sometimes the PSU can trip its own sort of "breaker", and has to be reset by unplugging the unit.. but you did switch it off. Why not unplug it for a half hour and then try it.

Sylvander’s Diagnostic Flowcharts
Download a copy of my diagnostic flowcharts from here
www.erniek.eclipse.co.uk/downloads/sylvanderdiags.zip
and print them to leaf through.
Begin on the STARTUP chart.
Is it "dead", or is it just failing to complete the POST?
Does she hear the single short beep?
Is the modem being powered only from the USB connection, or is there a separate additional power unit supplying it?

The only answer I can give now is the power for the modem comes through the USB; it does not have a separate power supply. I'll print your chart and take it home and follow its advice, noting any POST beeps.

As I suspected, it's the power supply. The 12v rail had died. Rushed out to buy a new 500w unit and it's now fitted.

You know, it's amazing how many of these little problems around here are fixed within 24 hours...
Good job!

Well I had to go to PC World to get the power unit. It's the only place open until 20:00. I wouldn't normally grace their doorstep but when your wife is banging on about not being able to access the computer, needs must!
