I just bought a leadtek A6600gt to play need for speed most wanted. I am using NVIDIA latest drivers as to date. Have not try the leadtek driver though.
I use fraps software to see what is the fps. I got only about 25-32 fps while in game (racing time). that's pretty low. after first race, when i get into the menu, everything seems SO SLOW. fraps shows 2fps in the menu. so i have to slowly select the options and stuff then go into game again. in game its back to 25- 32 fps.
the driver settings i set all to application controlled. for the nfs most wanted settings, i set to texture filtering, world detail etc to medium. car reflection updates, etc, i set to High. so in another words, some medium some high. I tried before all high settings but in game doesnt look smooth so i change some to medium n some high.
My specs
p4 2.4 533Mhz
asus p4s8x-x socket 478
1 GB pc2700 ddr (NO dual support)
audigy 2
leadtek A6600GT
icute psu bout 400W
cpu temp is bout 39-41 C
Any idea why still laggy? have not try the leadtek driver yet though. but nvidia driver can be use for all nvidia cards right regardless of manufacturer?

Yes, the NVidia driver is the reference driver. It's also the one I always use - I never touch the other ones. Never had a problem, either.
What vid card did you have in there before? How did you update the driver?
Here's something to try. First, make sure the NVidia driver is on your desktop. Then boot into Safe Mode (hold down F8 just after the POST). Then go into the Control Panel -> Add/Remove Programs, delete any and all NVidia and other graphics drivers in there. Then reboot normally, cancel the Found New Hardware Wizard, and install the NVidia driver again from the desktop.
This is the "proper" procedure for upgrading a vid card.

My card was a gf2 Ti. i use tat to play nfsu in low settings though. and no lag while in menu or game.
well..i did not go into safe mode to uninstall but i uninstall it in normal boot and then reinstall.
I wonder whether the psu is not giving out enough power during full load while playing games to the graphic card.
Or maybe its because the hdd is too fragmented as i just transfer all files to a backup hdd as it is full. then i install nfs. anyhow, i just need an everage fps from u guys for nfs mw using 6600gt card. coz imo, 25-30+ fps for this card, something is wrong somewhere.
I dont know much about electrical stuff. I would like to know whether all the components draws power off the psu when idle or they only draw power when using it. For eg, dvdrw idle; does it use any power, or leadtek tv tuner card in the pci slot...etc.

A 400W power supply should be enough to run that system, as long as the rails are balanced. You need at least 15A on the +12V rail, more is better. With such a low frame rate, I suppose it's possible that the PSU isn't giving the vid card enough power, but at that point it's just as likely to be overheating.
Well, hard drives and optical drives and expansion cards can go idle, or at least into a power save mode. But not the CPU or vid card. Those are always being used, otherwise the system would just... die. Shut down. The CPU and vid card do use more power when playing a game, but they always draw some power no matter what.
If it's not a PSU problem, and it's not overheating, then I'd say it's either a driver problem or the game needs patching. It's gotta be one of those two. (Or possibly that you need to reinstall Windows but let's save that one for later.)

yes, i suspect something might be heating up as previously i took all out to clean it. For the psu, may i know wat is the airflow of the psu? 1 bottom and 1 at the back. The back of course is sucking the air out. I am curious whether i put the bottom correctly as i forgot which direction it is blowing when i took it out. Currently it is blowing out from the psu. meaning the back n top is blowing outwards. The bottom should be taking air "into" the psu?
Now while playing games, it randomly hangs with a continously loud "ing" sound from the speaker. Cant do anything except pressing the restart button. Even with warcraft.
I don't think its the cpu heating as its around 40-42 C with the stock fan.

Yes, the bottom PSU fan pushes air into the PSU, and the rear fan exhausts air. These two fans are meant to cool the PSU and nothing else! All too often I see/hear people using the PSU as the exhaust fan for the entire system. Bad idea.
Hmmm... speaker hum? Sounds familiar... I think that might be a chipset driver problem or something. I will say this, though - SiS chipsets make for poor gaming systems. I've been working with many people over the last month trying to get their SiS-based mobo's to play nicely with games, but to no avail. I'm starting to think that SiS is out to get me...
So yeah, my preferred solution would be to take a sledge hammer to that mobo and buy another one. But what the heck! Try the drivers first!

not hum sound. its sharp 'ing' sound. its when the whole system hangs while in game.
Sledge hammer~~No. haha. Dont have cash for new system. I will try to solve the psu first. Thanks.
