Hi
My Mums computer seems to have some sort of adware or spyware on it.
Every 3 minutes or so she gets a pop up message box saying:
_______________________________________________
Message from SYSTEM to ALERT on [time] and [Date]
STOP! WINDOWS REQUIRES IMMEDIATE ATTENTION.
Windows has found 47 CRITICAL SYSTEM ERRORS!
To fix the errors please do the following:
1.Download Registry Repair from: mmm.fixnow.net
2.Install Regitry Repair
3.Run Registry Repair
4.Reboot your computer
FAILURE TO ACT NOW MAY LEAD TO DATA LOSS AND CORRUPTION
OK

Sometimes the internet address says mmm.scanfix.net
I've run spybot and ad-aware numerous time with no success.
Any help would be greatly appreciated as its driving her insane!
Thanks

Assuming this is WinXP I would first go to Windows Services and find Messenger... Turn it off and set it to disabled...
Next, please post a HijackThis log so we can see if the system is infected...
To run HJT, extract it to a permanent folder such as one
you create like C:\HJT. Close all open windows and
browsers and make sure that all programs are enabled if
you use msconfig. Run it and Scan, then Save the log.
When the log window appears, Right click to Copy it, open
your browser and come here to Paste the entire log. Do
not make any changes until it is checked since most items
are either benign or essential to the computer.

Hi,
Just realised the machine is running WINDOWS 2000 Professional 5 with service
pack 4. Does the above still apply?
Thanks

Did you disable Messenger Service?? Did the popups stop??
Please open and HJT scan and put a check by:

With messenger back on they are still having pops ups although now they are less frequent (29 in about 9 hours)
Is there anything more we can do?
Thanks very much.

Why did you turn Messsenger back on?? It is not needed and it should be turned off by default if MS was at all security conscious...
Your log seems to be okay... Run a couple more scans to be sure it is clean:
Please download, install, and update the NEW free version of Ewido trojan scanner (http://www.ewido.net/en/download/):
When installing, under "Additional Options" uncheck "Install background guard" and "Install scan via context menu".
When you run ewido for the first time, you may get a warning "Database could not be found!". Click OK. We will fix this in a moment.
From the main ewido screen, click on update in the left menu, then click the Start update button.
After the update finishes (the status bar at the bottom will display "Update successful")
Click on the Scanner button in the left menu, then click on Complete System Scan. This scan can take quite a while to run.
Check "Perform action with all infections".
When the scan finishes, click on "Save Report". This will create a text file. Make sure you know where to find this file again.
Try running an MWavScan... It will produce a log in the lower window that has the bad list and you will need to use Ctrl-C to copy it and then paste it here for review.... If the list is extremely long, you can just paste the lines that begin with the word "File" since those are the ones we need to be most concerned about...
http://www.mwti.net/products/mwav/mwav.asp
It will suggest that you buy the product to fix what it finds, but that is not necessary... Just post the bad part of the scan and we will deal with it...

The pops are still there. getting about 4 to 6 a day now which is great compared to what it was but it does mean there's something still lurking around in the machine!
Thanks as always

As I asked last time:
Why did you turn Messsenger back on?? It is not needed and it should be turned off by default if MS was at all security conscious...
If it is still on and you want those popups to stop, you need to turn it off....
Your log looks clean... The infected files seem to be in a Temporary folder, so please download CCleaner and run it to clear out temp folders...
http://www.ccleaner.com/
Reboot and post back with a fresh MWavScan... The entries that begin with "Object" are just leftover in the Registry... You can use CCleaner to clear them as well, but note that it can be aggressive in cleaning the Registry...
