please review hijack log

Could some one please review my Hijack this log?
I am very suspecious, but I don't understand any of this.
The reasons I am wondering are that within two days my DVD drive has stopped working (ref thread (http://www.pcguide.com/vb/showthread.php?t=42909)), my printer has stopped working, and something has erased all of system restore points. I'm totally lost. Any help would be greatly apreciated.
So far I have run Kaspersky, Spybot S&D, and Housecall to no avail. I ran a program to to check for rootkits that was mentioned here on the forum, but I don't remember what it was. If you need to know, let me know and I will find it again. Thank You.

First and most important... Turn the WordWrap OFF in Notepad before you post again... It is much harder to read logs that are chopped up like this one... Then...

1) Run Spybot-S&D
2) Go to the Mode menu and make sure "Advanced Mode" is selected
3) On the left hand side, choose Tools -> Resident
4) Uncheck "Resident TeaTimer" and OK any prompts
5) Restart your computer.

Next, I am guessing that these desktop.ini files are the problem since they are not items I have seen before... Unless you know them to be okay, I suggest that you open an HJT log and put checks by:

See if you can find the desktop.ini files and delete them...

Reboot and post a fresh log...

Thank you for your attention Budfred.
I made the changes to Spybot that you told me to, then did a scan, and it gave me a clean bill of health.
I made the checks to Hijack that you suggested, however it wouldn't let me make most of them. It said that the applications were in use. I believe just from the sound of them they might be from "Start-up Mechanic". I'll post the log now, uninstall it then post the new log. Thank you again.

I've uninstalled Start-up mechanic and System mechanic, the only two things that look at my start-up (that I know of). Those funny things are still there. Here is the most current log (directly after a re-boot). Any suggestions?

You didn't need to run the Spybot scan... we just needed to disable TeaTimer since it can block some fixes...

We are going to need to figure out what is hiding here... Please run these scans:

Clean out Temp folders with CCleaner...

Please download, install, and update the NEW free version of Ewido trojan scanner (http://www.ewido.net/en/download/):

When installing, under "Additional Options" uncheck "Install background guard" and "Install scan via context menu".

When you run ewido for the first time, you may get a warning "Database could not be found!". Click OK. We will fix this in a moment.

From the main ewido screen, click on update in the left menu, then click the Start update button.

After the update finishes (the status bar at the bottom will display "Update successful")

Click on the Scanner button in the left menu, then click on Complete System Scan. This scan can take quite a while to run.

Check "Perform action with all infections".

When the scan finishes, click on "Save Report". This will create a text file. Make sure you know where to find this file again.


and then...

Try running an MWavScan... It will produce a log in the lower window that has the bad list and you will need to use Ctrl-C to copy it and then paste it here for review.... If the list is extremely long, you can just paste the lines that begin with the word "File" since those are the ones we need to be most concerned about...

It will suggest that you buy the product to fix what it finds, but that is not necessary... Just post the bad part of the scan and we will deal with it...

and finally...

You may want to print out these instructions for reference, since you will have to restart your computer during the fix.

Please download AproposFix from here:

Save it to your desktop but do NOT run it yet.

Then please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following:
1) Restart your computer
2) After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
3) Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
4) Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.


Once in Safe Mode, please double-click aproposfix.exe and unzip it to the desktop. Open the aproposfix folder on your desktop and run RunThis.bat. Follow the prompts.

When the tool is finished, please reboot back into normal mode, and post a new HijackThis log, along with the entire contents of the log.txt file in the aproposfix folder.

Reboot and post the Ewido and MWavScan... Let me know how the rest went...

Ok, I've done all that you said to except the last step. When I'm in safe mode, and run the ap, the screen comes up, then my computer totally freezes up. No keyboard, no mouse control. The only way out is to turn off my surge protector.

If you are looking at the lower log, we probably don't need to see it...

I have a feeling this is a rootkit... I suggest trying the AproposFix in Safe Mode again and see if you can get it to work.... If the computer freezes up again, you can usually turn it off by pressing the power button and holding it until the computer shuts off...

You can also try running RootkitRevealer if that doesn't work...

Please download RootkitRevealer.exe and unzip it into a folder. Run a scan and produce a log...

Do not worry if there are a large number of items, this is normal.
It is a deep scan which will take a considerable amount of time, I suggest you disconnect from the internet and leave the PC alone until its finished.

Thanks for the help Budfred, but yesterday whatever it was took over my keyboard, so I had to resort to booting from disc and reformatting my HD. I appologize for the time you spent trying to help me, only to have me erase it all. Once it took over my keyboard, I really don't think I had much of a choice. I really do think it is a shame, because I believe the whole situation would have been a wonderful learning experience for myself.
If you're not too upset with me, could you answer one question? Before things got really hairy, I saved some things (jpeg, word doc, etc.) to a jump drive. Is there any chance this nasty bugger could be in the jump drive?

If you had a rootkit, a wipe and reinstall is actually the safest choice... It is also important to completely wipe the drive, not just a simple format...

If it was a rootkit, any data on the drive or typed while the rootkit was there may be compromised and it would be a good idea o contact any financial institutions involved and change account numbers and passwords... It would be a good idea to change passwords in general as well....

And if it is a rootkit, you cannot be sure that the jumpdrive is not contaminated as well... rootkits are some of the worst things out there right now... Be sure to armor up your system to protect against any new infections...

Here is my prevention speech to help avoid future infection:

Before tossing it, if you know someone who has a Mac or Linux machine, you could wipe it there and then reformat and use it on your machine again...

Could you provide a link to explain this if you have it? My research was a little hindered with an off/on keyboard.
FYI: I only have a DVD rw.
Will this totally whipe ot the drive, because there was a partition that I couldn't do anything with. Couldn't delete it or repartion, or anything (my buggers home?). The original version of XP home is still showing in the boot, so it must be there. I would really like to start out totally fresh. What the hay, I can find another whole day to reistall, and update everything (that really is a pain).

You can download the utilities from the manufacturer of your hard drive and it will include a utility to completely wipe your hard drive...

You can download one of these programs:

install them on a boot floppy and use them to do the wipe...

If you are saying that you don't have a floppy drive, you can make a bootable CD... Sylvander posts instructions for doing that frequently, so you can look at one of his posts about how to do that... Whichever one you use should be able to return your drive to the state it was in before you loaded anything on it... Be careful to totally power down the computer when you finish the wipe and leave it off for a little bit to make sure the RAM is cleared too....
