View Full Version : IE Pop-Up Plague

Hey all. Marry Christmas/Happy Holidays a little early!!
My dad is having a particularly irritating problem with nhis lap-top that is completely vexing my brother in law and I. For whatever reason, IE continuously opens of its own accord to the Yahoo home page. I've installed all windows updates (Windows 2000), updated his McCafee AV software and ran a scan, ran Spybot S&D, as well as Ad-Aware. Nothing doing. If we leave the laptop running and connected for an hour or so, there are literally 20 or 30 open IE windows waiting for us.
Immediately before each incident, a small white box appears briefly right above the task bar that says "Internet!". It only appears for a moment, and doesn't seem to trigger any application or process entries in the task manager. Also, right-clicking or mouse hovering over the box while it opens reveals nothing about its origin. System logs don't tell us anything either.
Right now we're running Highjack This and trying to make some sense of what we're seeing, but the answer is still frustratingly elusive. Any ideas?
Dad just ordered himself another laptop yesterday anyway (this model technically belongs to the company he just retired from, but he was VP so nobody's telling him to give it back), but in the mean time the frquency of these pop-ups makes it impossible to do anyt6hing with it.
Any random ideas or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. At this point we're willing to try just about anything.
Thanks!
J

First turn off Windows Messenger Service.
Next, post the HJT log here, DO NOT try to fix items using HJT until advised to do so after being read by the experts.
You may also try Ewido AntiMalware free trial/free scan to clean up some of the infection, but it is safest to post the HJT log first.

I don't see anything in your log that would cause the problem... Did you turn off the Messenger Service and, if so, are the popups gone??
It would be a good idea to run the Ewido scan if the problem persists and other scans may be needed as well...
Please download, install, and update the NEW free version of Ewido trojan scanner (http://www.ewido.net/en/download/):
When installing, under "Additional Options" uncheck "Install background guard" and "Install scan via context menu".
When you run ewido for the first time, you may get a warning "Database could not be found!". Click OK. We will fix this in a moment.
From the main ewido screen, click on update in the left menu, then click the Start update button.
After the update finishes (the status bar at the bottom will display "Update successful")
Click on the Scanner button in the left menu, then click on Complete System Scan. This scan can take quite a while to run.
Check "Perform action with all infections".
When the scan finishes, click on "Save Report". This will create a text file. Make sure you know where to find this file again.
