Merry Christmahanukka whatever you wanakka!!! For the holidays im happy to present you all with imaginary checks for the sum of $10,000!!! Everybody has ben waiting since the 5k rigs, so lets see what you guys got!

I'd like to use saphallines rules (thanx saph) and add a bit:
1) - Peripherals are not needed. You can leave out the monitors, speakers, mice, keyboards, printers, whatever! These parts are very user-specific and are not included in "the box". If you want hardcore stuff... no prob - just pay the price!

2) - Parts that help in OC'ing can be included (like liquid coolers) but OC'ing is not required nor is it encouraged by the forums!! (Gotta get that disclaimer in here. )

3) - No leaving out any core/box parts!! You can't start a system without a PSU or a hard drive. You must include these parts by default.

4) - You may include any OS for "free". Even if it costs money. It's not technically part of the box, but it is needed for a working PC and we are working on a budget here. You may even include multiple OS'es for free. If your idea of a dream machine is a triple-boot system, by all means, share it with us. But the OS is free.

5) - Save the math and dont include shipping

6) - stick to newegg, if newegg can not supply your desired item, please reffer to a reliable website.

Feel free to make comments and help improve

HAVE FUN!

My OS is automatically free anywayYes, but some of us actually like to play games on our computers. :p I have a Linux box, too, so I know very well how cool Linux is. But it doesn't support all my games yet. Until it does, I'm still going to have a Windows system around.

i an not a nerd - What exactly is that system supposed to be used for? Why include an SLI mobo for a CAD workstation??

i an not a nerd - What exactly is that system supposed to be used for? Why include an SLI mobo for a CAD workstation??

Well, this system would be used mainly for CAD work, and the SLI was so that when the user gets another vid card (for gaming) they would have somewhere to plug it in.

For some reason I find it amusing that, even for $10,000 dream machines, the sub $50 DVD burners are still the ones most of us go for. Too bad that sort of beneficial competition doesn't creep into more aspects of our lives.

I guess thats cause the plextors carried there name a bit further than thier back could handle.. they have a great reputation, have a 8mb cache over the standerd 2mb, but as a gamer, or a CAD worker - where does that come in handy? especially these days when hard drives are 500mb and then you have 4 of them, why would you want all those dvd's laying around? even in a case, its still a hassel unless you have a burnt movie library

OK, so drives today are a bit bigger than 500mb :) a small yet BIG mistake

BTW Saphi, nice rig, looks almost like mine... :) god bless those opterons!! (i have an opty sitting in a tray waitng for the cash flow to bring in the rest of my computer)

between the two of us *cough, cough* would you really look at a $10k rig through a 17" crt monitor?!!?!? thats just not right :P

saphalline
01-04-2006, 01:39 AM
No. With that sort of price range (even though we're leaving out peripherals and such) I would go for at least two 19" LCD monitors. Maybe one normal one and one widescreen one for watching movies.

Hmmm... Maybe I'll assemble another one for A/V duties. You could get some nice recording hardware in that price range, not to mention all the huge hard drives you want! 8 x SATA on modern high-end mobo's. Oh the possibilities...

No, I can't recomend any touch screens. I am still in the learning process myself. I have never even heard of anyone using one on a home PC.
There are some available at Newegg (http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.asp?submit=PROPERTY&SubCategory=514&bop=and&Order=stock) ranging from $450-$1200.
There is a basic explaination of how they work at Howstuffworks (http://electronics.howstuffworks.com/question716.htm)

Touchscreens seem to be intended more for specialist apps, like info/internet kiosks (or carPCs :D).

From what I have read (not much so could very easily be misinformed) having touchscreen capability can affect the maximum usable resolution, since the screen resolution needs to closely match the touchpanel resolution or you end up pressing a point that relates to a different point on the screen.

Obviously they are also expensive compared to non-touchscreens of similar size, and I don't know how well the picture quality compares (EDIT Resisitive and capacitive degrade picture quality apparently, that'll teach me to read completely before posting  ).

Touchscreens are pretty cool. I've seen them used in all sorts of computer mods, but they usually do secondary display duty, and have specialized software for what they do. Things like music playing or quick-launch or movie watching - whatever. As a secondary specialized display, low resolutions like 400 x 300 or 640 x 480 aren't so hard to swallow on a touchscreen.

I think the most inventive use of a touchscreen I ever saw was as a boot loader. The touchscreen was imbedded into the side of the case and the system was modded to load a boot menu to the touchscreen, which was then used to pick the OS/volume to boot, and then the normal primary monitor was used once the OS/volume was loaded. It's been a long time, though, so I can't remember the details of that project. I remember thinking it was cool at the time, but the boot loader created some complications in how the system worked, so it wasn't all that practical for someone like me (gamer).
