View Full Version : scroll mouse doesn't scroll

OS: Win ME
system: Dell Inspiron laptop

I have plugged two different PS/2 scroll mice into the PS/2 port on the back of my Dell Inspiron laptop and neither of them will scroll. I have never gotten used to a touchpad, so whenever I use a laptop, the first thing I do is plug a mouse in. The mouse works fine other than that. In Control Panel>Mouse>Wheel tab everything is greyed out, so obviously Windows is not detecting a scroll mouse. There is a USB port, but I don't have a USB mouse to plug in and try, or I would do so. I have never had to load a driver for any kind of mouse--wheel mouse or otherwise--in Windows regardless of the system. Any ideas?

Thanks,
Relztrah

Sounds like you don't have the correct driver installed.

Would I be correct in assuming that these scroll-mice were made after the WinME OS was produced?
Hence the OS doesn't have drivers for these and you haven't provided them.

"In Control Panel>Mouse>Wheel tab everything is greyed out, so obviously Windows is not detecting a scroll mouse."
The fact that the wheel tab is shown means windows knows that it is a wheel mouse, but the fact that it's greyed out means it doesn't have the necessary files and registry settings to make use of the feature.

PS/2 mice can have problems on laptops because the touchpad is usually the default pointing device on the PS/2 bus. I've had many problems with PS/2 mice on laptops in the past. USB mice fixed 95% of those problems. The rest of them... I never did fix...
