Hey guys I have been volunteered to fix grannys computer and I could really use some help. I have read up on your site and have installed adaware and spybot but am still haveing issues. I also installed Hijack but have no where close the skill lvl required to read it. Here is the log file for you to check out.

Your grandmother seems to have picked up one a Vundo infection and she has some of the extremely dubious garbage that Dell is installing on their computers... She has almost NO protection on her computer, so there may even be more buried more deeply... We will deal with Vundo and then address the other matters if you would like...

Please print these instructions out for use in Safe Mode.

Please download VundoFix.exe (http://www.atribune.org/downloads/VundoFix.exe) to your desktop.
Double-click VundoFix.exe to extract the files
This will create a VundoFix folder on your desktop.
After the files are extracted, please reboot your computer into Safe Mode. You can do this by restarting your computer and tapping the F8 key just before Windows starts to load until a menu appears. Use your up arrow key to highlight Safe Mode then hit enter.
Once in safe mode open the VundoFix folder and doubleclick on KillVundo.bat
You will first be presented with a warning.

Thx for your help bro I have encountered an issue though... When booting in safe mode im getting a black screen. It has the usual "Safe Mode" label in all 4 corners and also gives the Microsoft Windows version and build at the top of the page but the rest is just a black screen. So um now what?

So I guess the next step would be getting her computer some adequate protection. I downloaded zone alarm and I think I will have her purchase Norton. What else do you think?

I would NOT suggest Norton... If you want to pay money for a program, I would go with NOD32... If you want a free antivirus, I would suggest Avast or AVG... Whichever you use, set it up for automatic updates...

However, I suggest you wait until this is clean before installing anything else... You have a new problem showing in the log and I strongly recommend getting rid of MyWebSearch... They are sleazy at best and may even allow other garbage into the system... If you decide to remove it, check in Add/Remover Program for MyWay or MyWebSearch and uninstall it... If that doesn't work, fix the HJT items below...

Open and HJT scan and put a check by:

Close all open windows except HJT and press Fix checked...

Find and delete this folder... It will begin with "mignon", but there will be more letters...

Since there may still be more hidden garbage, an Ewido scan would be a good idea:

Please download, install, and update the NEW free version of Ewido trojan scanner (http://www.ewido.net/en/download/):

When installing, under "Additional Options" uncheck "Install background guard" and "Install scan via context menu".

When you run ewido for the first time, you may get a warning "Database could not be found!". Click OK. We will fix this in a moment.

From the main ewido screen, click on update in the left menu, then click the Start update button.

After the update finishes (the status bar at the bottom will display "Update successful")

Click on the Scanner button in the left menu, then click on Complete System Scan. This scan can take quite a while to run.

Check "Perform action with all infections".

When the scan finishes, click on "Save Report". This will create a text file. Make sure you know where to find this file again.


Reboot and post a fresh HJT log with the Ewido log...
