Welcome to PCGuide!

Download HijackThis. (http://tomcoyote.com/hjt/) It is a compressed (zipped) file, so you'll have to extract it. Make sure that you actually extract HijackThis to its own folder--not the desktop and not a temp folder. DO NOT run it from within a zip manager (Winzip), as no backups will be saved. Close all open programs including your browser. Now go to the directory where you extracted HijackThis and doubleclick the program icon. Click Do A System Scan and Save A Log. Your system will be scanned and a log created. Now return to the Forum to reply to your original post. If you had closed the log, open it back up. Highlight the entire contents. Copy and paste the contents of the HijackThis log into your post. Do not attempt to fix anything yet, you could make successful repair more difficult. Wait for help. Budfred or Classic or one of the other HJT gurus will be along and let you know what to do next.

When I try to HiJackThis run it it says "This application failed to start because MSVBVM60.DLL was not found. Re-installing the application may fix this problem."

HiJackThis needs the Visual Basic runtime files to execute. You can get them from the Microsoft site here (http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=BF9A24F9-B5C5-48F4-8EDD-CDF2D29A79D5&displaylang=en)

Eeeks!!1 Looks to my novice eyes like there are a few questionable entries there. You're in good hands though. One of the experts will probably offer some suggestions very soon. Don't know if anyone has bothered yet, but...

Yes, or at least wait for someone like me to come along...

You have a major mess here... Please start with this, but download and set up all tools before rebooting to Safe Mode:

You may want to print out these instructions for reference, since you will have to restart your computer during the fix. Be sure to follow each fix in the order posted...

Please download AproposFix from here:
http://swandog46.geekstogo.com/aproposfix.exe

Save it to your desktop but do NOT run it yet.

Then please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following:
1) Restart your computer
2) Just before the Windows starts to load, press F8.
3) Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
4) Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.

Once in Safe Mode, please double-click aproposfix.exe and unzip it to the desktop. Open the aproposfix folder on your desktop and run RunThis.bat. Follow the prompts.

Download and run CCleaner to clear out temporary folders...

http://www.ccleaner.com/

Please download, install, and update the NEW free version of Ewido trojan scanner (http://www.ewido.net/en/download/):

When installing, under "Additional Options" uncheck "Install background guard" and "Install scan via context menu".

When you run ewido for the first time, you may get a warning "Database could not be found!". Click OK. We will fix this in a moment.

From the main ewido screen, click on update in the left menu, then click the Start update button.

After the update finishes (the status bar at the bottom will display "Update successful")

Click on the Scanner button in the left menu, then click on Complete System Scan. This scan can take quite a while to run.

Check "Perform action with all infections".

When the scan finishes, click on "Save Report". This will create a text file. Make sure you know where to find this file again.

Download CWShredder and run it to fix whatever it finds:

http://www.intermute.com/spysubtract/cwshredder_download.html

Open an HJT scan and put checks by any that are still there:

Did you run CWShredder and CCleaner?? What happened with them?? What problem did you have with Ewido?? Did you manage to delete everything??

The information you give is the only thing we have to work with... please provide details... If you still have a SpySheriff background, you may still have the infection... Please be clear...

Shredder and Cleaner worked fine, Ewido just froze at the end and I couldn't save a log

Did you try to run Ewido in Safe Mode?? Did you manage to delete everything I suggested to delete?? What is happening with your system now... is that background still there?? Have you tried resetting your background??

ProjectEx123

Ok I'll try it in safe mode, because Aprops or whatever the first thing is called told me to restart in normal

ProjectEx123

Set WinXP to show all hidden files and look for those files again... Delete them if you find them...

In Windows XP, on the taskbar, click Start > My Computer.
In Windows Me/2000/XP, on the Tools menu, click Folder Options.
On the View tab, uncheck Hide file extensions for known file types.
In Windows Me/2000/XP, uncheck Hide protected operating system files. Then, under the "Hidden files" folder, click Show hidden files and folders.
If you see a warning message, click Yes.
Click Apply.
Click OK.

Then run a Silent Runners log and post it here:

Please download SilentRunners from here:
http://www.silentrunners.org/Silent%20Runners.zip
Unzip it to the desktop and double-click on it. If you get any kind of warning message about scripts, please choose to allow the script to run. When the scan is finished, it will create a logfile on the desktop. Please post the entire contents of this logfile for me to see.

Do I do this while in safe mode?

Budfred
12-28-2005, 07:40 PM
Deleting the files/folders will generally work best in Safe Mode, so sure...

Silent Runners can generally be run in Normal Mode, but if you run into trouble, do it in Safe Mode...

Okay, we can try another fix for SpySheriff and see if it can get that last bit...

You may want to print out or make a copy of these instructions before starting, because you will not be able to connect to the internet during most of this fix.

Download smitRem.exe (http://noahdfear.geekstogo.com/click%20counter/click.php?id=1) and save the file to your desktop.
Double click on the file to extract it to it's own folder on the desktop.

If you do not already have Ad-Aware SE 1.06 installed, follow these download and setup instructions. Also check for updates:
Ad-Aware SE Setup (http://rstones12.geekstogo.com/adawareSE_setup.htm)
Again, do NOT run a scan yet.

Next, please reboot your computer in Safe Mode

Open the smitRem folder, then double click the RunThis.bat file to start the tool. Follow the prompts on screen. Your desktop and icons will disappear and then reappear again --- this is normal.
Wait for the tool to complete and Disk Cleanup to finish --- this may take a while; please be patient.

Next, run Ad-aware and perform a full scan. Remove everything found.

Now run Ewido Security Suite again

Next go to Start -> Control Panel, click Display -> Desktop -> Customize Desktop -> Web -> Uncheck "Security Info" if present.

Restart your computer in normal mode.

Run the Panda online virus scan at http://www.pandasoftware.com/products/activescan.htm

- Once you are on the Panda site click the Scan your PC button
- A new window will open...click the Check Now button
- Enter your Country
- Enter your State/Province
- Enter your e-mail address and click send
- Select either Home User or Company
- Click the big Scan Now button
- If it wants to install an ActiveX component allow it
- It will start downloading the files it requires for the scan (Note: It may take a couple of minutes)
- When download is complete, click on Local Disks to start the scan
- When the scan completes, if anything malicious is detected, click the See Report button, then Save Report and save it to a convenient location.

Finally, restart your computer once more, and please post a new HijackThis log as well as the log from the Ewido scan and the log from the smitRem tool, which will be located at C:\smitfiles.txt.
Let us know if any problems persist.
