To make a long story short, I was stupid when changing my harddrive and I may have let ESD fry my motherboard.

If it's not the motherboard, it's the power supply that's causing the problem (computer won't start).

I'd like to narrow the problem to one of the two by myself. I really don't like the thought of having to go into a repair shop for this.

So is there any way I, by myself, can check if the motherboard's been nuked by my stupidity?

First, make sure all connections are secure, and reseat all cards and RAM making sure they're fully seated.

If no luck, then see if the system gives a display with a barebones setup by installing just the PS, MB, CPU, RAM, video card, monitor, and KB.

If it gives a display, then add all other cards and all drives one at a time until the problem reoccurs. The last component installed is the cause.

If the barebones does not give a display, then the PS can be tested with a voltmeter:

If the PS is ok or you do not have a voltmeter, then swapping out components or having them shop tested is the only way to find the culprit.

Download Sylvander's diagnostic chart and run through that.
You can find a link to that here:
