View Full Version : Confused about New PC Specs - Dell E310

Hi everyone:
I am a newbie who gets very confused about NEw PC Desktop SPECS. I presently have an Emachines 633id purchased in 1999 which is forever locking up and freezing on me. I am interested in a New PC and I went to a mall near my home and a Dell E310 Desktop was recommended to me. Can anyone help and tell me if this is a good system. I basically use a PC for Internet Surfing (news pages) and email and perhaps some music downloading. I used to download songs from Winmx but I understand that site is no longer free. I want a new system with a separate system restore disk and I would also like a floppy drive as this is what I am used to. But I would like the new combo drive too! Any thoughts/suggestions/help greatly appreciated. Thanks so much.
Crestwood :)

Welcome to the PC Guide forums!
You aren't usually going to find PCs these days with the old style seperate restore CDs. You will find restore partitions on the HDD instead, and if lucky you can make your own restore disks on initial setup.
Dell computers, particularly the cheap ones don't have much of a following here, the systems may use proprietary parts and cannot be repaired with normal parts, as well as having a bad habit of dying a week or so out of warranty or earlier.
Same class of "throwaway" PCs as Emachines.
Just my opinion, we try to help users fix them the same as any other.

Welcome to the PC Guide Forums!! :D
Hmmm... well, um... The first thing you gotta realize is that most of us around here are not Dell fans. Proprietary pieces of junk that can't be upgraded much beyond some more RAM. I personally don't like them because of the "proprietary" part, which means if you want to replace a dead/dying component, it will probably cost a fortune to get a Dell-specific part. It also means that some standard components won't work in a Dell - things like vid cards and hard drives have been known to be rejected by Dell systems. Of course, this isn't limited to Dell - the evils of proprietariness extend to HP, Gateway, and the slew of other major PC assemblers out there. But Dell is the OEM poster kid because they've been the perpetrator of some of the worst OEM/proprietary acts in computer history.
That being said, your needs are very modest. You could literally pick any new system off the shelf of any store or online website and be perfectly happy with it. Doesn't take much power to surf the web, do email, and download stuff (legally of course ;) ). No reason you can't have everything else you want, too, like that floppy drive and combo optical drive. As far as Dell's "deals" go, the E310 looks like normal Dell stuff. But I can't in good conscience recommend Dell because well... it's Dell. Too many bad experiences with Dell, HP, and Compaq for me to recommend any of them.
On another note, I'm sure there's a way to clean up that old EMachines 633id system and make it good as new again. That has a Socket 370 Celeron in it, if memory serves me right. Probably needs more RAM and a fresh install of Windows 98/SE, but it otherwise sounds salvagable. Not trying to talk you out of a new computer because I know very well that a new computer is probably overdue if only because age will eventually catch up with your old one, but just know that the old one can still be useful as a secondary system or to sell/give away to someone.
If you want to stick around, I'm sure there will be more comments. And probably some more Dell rants. ;) Don't take too much offense at Dell flaming around here - most of us have gotten burned by them for one reason or another. But seriously, for your needs, I doubt you'd run into any issues besides the short warranty and foreign-speaking tech support people over the phone. :p And you'd get that from Gateway just as well.

Here are some things that the E310 has that basically serverly limit its upgradeability:
Only two slots for RAM
Only a 250 Watt PSU
No PCI Express or AGP 8x slot- only 2 PCI slots
Right there you basiclly shoot yourself in the foot if you ever want to do anything more than surf and e-mail read. Even the slightest graphics stuff will become a grind with onboard video.
Look around places like these for something that is a better all around product.

Hi: Thanks to all of you for your replies.
I was all set to order my new Dell E310 but not I am afraid to do so - Dell's reputation seems very bad. I was referred to this site by another AARP member. Can someone please recommend a good reliable system for me to purchase. My budget is from 1,000 to $1500.00. I use a computer for internet surfing, email and word processing, and perhaps downloading a few songs. I would like something that would be reliable, and something that would not need to be upgraded in a year or so. Again, I thank all of you and I appreciate all the help I can get (I am a senior who is tech challenged)! :)

You are a canidate for a nice Acer desktop:
Look at these models:

Throw in this 19" monitor with speakers and you are under $1000.00.
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16824009044
The products are well made. This is a low end system, but all you need is a low end system. Much better than DELL.
Make sure you get a system with one year on-site service.
Once you decide on which PC you have, post back we'll make sure you set it up with all the security you need to protect yourself.

Hockeyman, you love the cutting edge stuff. That is not what this guy needs. He will never upgrade his system. He is the kind of guy who will use his system until it drops and then get a new one. On-board video is all he needs. What does he need to add PCI slots for? everything is on board? When making recommendations, you have to match the needs of the user you are trying to help. By the time he would consider upgrading, he would be in the same position he is in now, not worth putting money into an old machine.

Good point Classic. Sorry about that Crestwood. Those links Classic gave are great bang-for-the-buck pcs. My favorite out of those would be the t650: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16883102811
It has the largest HD. For under $400 though, the Sempron system still a great deal. . .if you really want to save the money definitly choose the Sempron based T135. There are some hardware advantages to the more expensive models, but as Classic pointed out, any of these will be great for what you are using them for.

I would also recommend the Acer T650. Great value for the money. Although I will point out that depending on how crestwood accesses the internet, a modem might need to be added to any of those systems. If you are still using 56K dial-up, you'll need to add a modem into the total cost (or use your current one). Those suckers are dirt-cheap, but I just wanted to mention that in case it is an issue.
Also, you can save money by using the monitor you already have for your current computer. It may be old and need to be upgraded anyway, but it's a thought if you happen to be perfectly happy with your current monitor. In terms of LCD monitors, I will present a point of caution for the elderly. LCD monitors provide tons of pixels per inch, and their native resolution has a tendency to make things too small to see for those who have bad eyesight. I like LCD monitors, and for your purposes you could certainly turn down the resolution, but LCD monitors don't scale well for text outside of their native resolution. CRT monitors are bigger, bulkier, and use more energy, but I've found them to still be the preferred type of monitor for those with bad eyesight.
You'll definitely be much happier with Acer's on-site tech support vs what Dell offers. I've heard some true horror stories about Dell's tech support, and in general the word "Dell" tends to be a joke in the computer world. All too often, I've seen co-workers and friends struggle with Dell's phone reps to try and get an on-site visit from a tech to fix their problem, and they almost always get turned down and then told to try some things and call them back if they don't work. This is of course after I've already warned them that Dell wasn't a good buy. They learned their lesson. ;)
You did set a pretty high budget for yourself, though! :D As you can see, you won't need half of that to get what you need. Don't let any snot-nosed "computer rep" tell you any differently!

Thanks again to all for replies. The desktop pcs you folks have referred to, is there a store where I can go look at them? I haven't heard of new egg or acer. I would kind of like to go look before I make my purchase if possible. Does Comp usa or Best Buy carry good models? I do have the 56K dial up with Walmart's unlimited mthly. service for $9.99 per month. My eyesight is good. I want a good reliable fast system that will not have to be upgraded in a couple of years, and I am willing to pay up to $1500 or so. The system which I presently have is an Emachines 633id - I upgraded the memory once from Crucial and I have been told that my memory is now maxed. Also this system has Windows ME and I have been told too that this software cannot be upgraded. The system forever locks up and freezes on me and many many times I have found it necessary to get out the separate system restore disks and restore the system to the way it was at time of purchase. THIS IS THE REASON WHY I WOULD LIKE TO HAVE A SEPARATE RESTORE DISK, as I would really be up a tree without it. My 633id has a floppy drive too and I have many word documents saved onto the floppies which I would like to keep - so is it possible to transfer from the floppies to a new desktop system. My Emachines 633id was purchased at Circuit City in 1999. Hope that all of the inquires do not sound lame or stupid but as I said I am a retired senior who needs all the help I can get. I have the free AVG Grisoft and spybot and adaware on my system which I run periodically to catch viruses, etc. Thanks again folks and God bless.

AVG, Ad-Aware, and Spybot are a great mix of protection. Newegg. is a California based on-line store, so you won't be able to "visit" them. You could look around locally for ACER, but I'm not sure if the big retailrs sell ACERs.

I would rather not get a system that is dirt cheap or a system that I would have to buy a separate modem for (please remember I am a senior who does not understand all of the computer specs and parts). I am willing to pay up to $1200.00 for a reliable and reputable system that would not have to be upgraded in the next 3 or 4 years. Also I do not understand all of the CD RW aspects so I guess I would need a "All in one or combo drive" since most of the newer systems do not have the floppy drive anymore. You guys are very helpful and it is much appreciated. What is Compaq Presario or HP like for reliability? [U]Thanks again!

That $400 system rivals what I paid $700 for 1 1/2 years ago. It is not slow, cheap or anything like that. Modems are really easy to install. We could walk you though it here. It would take about 5-10 minutes to do. Floppies are the same way. The drive that comes with all of these pc linked to by Classic can watch DVDs and CDs; plus burn DVDs and CDs. I like HP better than Dell, but I still prefer the ACER. Way more bang for your buck. Let us know what you think and are willing to do.

Compaq Presario 1630NX (http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?skuId=7440682&type=product&productCategoryId=pcmcat60700050017&id=1124432188074) - $579 for just the PC. Sold out on the website, but you can probably find them in the actual stores. Just put it together with a monitor and printer to get the combo deal. Or the HP Pavilion a1230n (http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?skuId=7439373&type=product&productCategoryId=pcmcat60700050017&id=1124431815188) for $719.99 for just the PC. Again, you can add it to a bundle in the store for a good deal. Or the Sony Vaio VGC-RB52 (http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?skuId=7486561&type=product&productCategoryId=pcmcat60700050017&id=1126591860760) for $999.99 for just the PC. This one's got a dual-core processor, so it's very cool.
I can appreciate your concerns about technology and not wanting to get involved too much in the lingo and all the specs and everything. But like I said before, your needs are so lightweight that you can literally walk into any store that sells computers and walk out 20 minutes later with a system that you'll be happy with for years to come. Especially if you stay in the $800-1200 price range for a whole computer bundle (PC & monitor & printer).
This is kind of like going to a fast food place and ordering. It's faster, easier, and cheaper to get the numbered "combo meals" if you just want something to eat. Or you can invidually pick out specific burgers and drinks and salads to create a meal specifically for your hunger needs. It's all about choice, really, but most people just get a combo meal and go the easy route (or they order a bunch of stuff from the new "dollar menu" craze).
For your computer needs, all you want is a "computer combo" - right? So just get one. Don't make things more complicated than that. You want everything all in one package so you don't have to worry about something missing or needing upgrading. Walk into a Best Buy or CompUSA or Fry's or whatever and just get a combo. It's fast, easy, and requires the least amount of technical expertise on your end.

The reaason you don't wan't the Compaq or HP is if they break, they are more difficult to fix becuase they use proprietary parts.
If you buy the Acer system from newegg, I'm sure they will add the modem for you. You should call them on the phone. They are one of the most reputable on-line dealers.

The old adage "you get what you pay for" is a good rule of thumb...
You appear to be fixed on the idea that by spending $1000-1500 that you will get more "bang for the buck," so to speak. The needs you have specified do not warrant spending your full budget to get a quality system.
The Acer system classic pointed out would do you well...
Newegg is one of the best on-line companies around.

Since you don't want to worry about messing with the computer, I recommend you get the best extended warranty you can. That way if something dies in a couple years you wont have to worry about it. So figure on at least a $100 or more for that depending on the actual price of the machine and where you get it.

You guys are great and understand desktop specs and technical aspects. I don't understand much of these things at all and I know that you would not steer me wrong. Going to take a closer look at the Acer T650 for $448.00. Presently have a Proview 17 in monitor and an HP Laser Jet Printer - imagine these would be compatible with the Acer T650. Does anyone know if the Acer T650 comes with a separate system restore disk? I would use my Walmart $9.95 unlimited ISP Service. Also does anyone know if Word or what type of word processing comes with the system, and would there be separate disks for this also? Also, have word documents now saved onto floppies - does the T650 come with a floppy drive? If not, could I transfer what I have from the floppies to some type of CDs (don't understand the CD drive either). THANKS AGAIN TO ALL OF YOU!!!!

I noticed on newegg that there is a picture of what appears to be 4 software CDs that are included. However, it does not specify what is on them...
Windows XP Home is included and I'm sure the driver software for the motherboard that might not be included on the WinXP Home disk...
I don't know that Acer has a "recovery disk" per se... If they provide a WinXP Home stand alone disk you can can do recovery installs from that along with the motherboard software provided...
There's a bit of a learning curve involved in anything new :) however, you will find that the folks here will be willing to walk you and answer any questions you might have. We were all in your shows with our computer knowledge at one point or another. ;)

This Acer does not appear to come with a floppy drive or dial-up modem. These could be added, as mentioned.
You might want to inquire at BestBuy as to what software is bundled with this computer. Microsoft Word could be purchased separately...best local price I've found is at WalMart.
There are free alternatives to Word if you are interested. They will also handle the Word documents you currently have saved.
As mentioned above, with the host of inept support folks have encountered it doesn't hurt to move into an area where you know your computer and what's going on with it. Our dependence on these things for quick information is increasing all the time...when they don't work we're not happy campers...
There's some basic information that we can provide here that I'm sure will help in keeping a smile on your face. :)

Hi there: Since the AcerT650 seems to be so very scarce - can you recommend another good system (for reliability and service) that would be a good bang for the buck? Also the Acer does not come with a modem and I would rather not have to be concerned about getting this separately (I being VERY tech challenged). I talked with some of the folks who live in my building (they are Seniors too) and they know as much about desktop systems as I do. Thanks again fellows and God bless you.
Really for your basic needs just about any of the big named entry level PCs would serve you well, technically speaking. I have never personally used an Acer PC but have heard nothing but good things about them. If finding one locally is very important to you, and you can't find an Acer dealer with on in stock there are plenty of other options.
You wouldn't need to worry about getting the latest and greatest PC with all of the newest technology or room for future upgrades as you seem quit opposed to doing any work inside the PC. Just look for a budget minded system (under $1,000 locally) with a modem already installed. Also make sure that it has at least 512 MB of RAM.
The only bad thing about Dell, HP/Compaq, Gateway and the others like them is the use of proprietary parts, questionable support, and inconsitency in quality. My family has owned two Gateway PCs, and I have never had any major problems with them. Heck I still had the first one we bought in 1995 or so still up and running fine until a HD failed and I didn't feel like replacing it. Similiar things can be said of Dell or HP/Compaq. As long as they keep working fine you will be happy, but it is when a prblem begins that you will have headaches trying to get tech support.

Here is my recommendation for Crestwood:
Go to CompUsa or BestBuy or another big box retailer that has a repair department in-house. Buy your $800 computer from them and spend the rest of the money on a tech-support package. This way, when something goes wrong, you put the computer in the car, take it to the store, set it on the counter, and say "fix this."
I have a laptop from HP that I bought on-line. Within a month it was in a box being FedEx-ed back to HP. Then they screwed up the return shipping and I was in line at the FedEx depot trying to wrangle my computer from the bowels of the warehouse.
Then, when I got it back, there was a problem and tech support had me flashing the BIOS, something I was willing to do but not for the technically-challenged. (I am not criticizing HP, just giving the example)
Desktops are great because you can just swap out defective parts but for someone who does not know how to do this, and is not interested in experimenting (this is not a bad thing!), I would not recommend our favorite on-line retailers bc I would hate to see you boxing up the desktop for repairs. Know what I mean?
Do what you said, check the Sunday ads, find a retailer with a thorough and long support package (3 years), and buy it. I imagine support may cost $200-$300. They even have packages that guarantee 24 hour, on-site response time. That way, when the modem card does not work, they have to come to your house and fix it.
Another option is the reputable local shop who can provide the same service, but with the major retailer, you always have to option of dropping off the computer and jumping up and down until they satisfy you!

I second jmkeuning's recommendation. That's a very good idea, especially since you don't need a $1200 PC. But an $800 PC with $400 of extended tech support (like 3 years of on-site & in-house service) would give you a lot more value for your money.

Went to Tiger Direct near my home yesterday with the intent of purchasing the Acer Aspire T650 for $449. They thought they had it in stock, but upon checking, they did not have it. A saleman told me that the Tiger Direct in Naperville, Illinois, has over 200 in stock. This is about 45 minutes from my home so I will head out there to make the purchase. I do have a question - why does the T650 not have a modem installed? I thought all computers came with modems and why would they make a desktop without one - because without a modem, one cannot access the internet? In any event, they told me that they would install a modem for me for $40 and that a floppy costs $19.00 and they would install that for me as well. I am very much looking forward to my new desktop system. Another question, for you helpful folks, which would be the best monitor to purchase with respects to having a monitor with less eye strain or a monitor which is the easiest on the eyes to view? Do not have a problem with my eyes at this point, but being a senior, I guess I am thinking ahead. I presently have a Proview monitor and sometimes after being on the computer for half hour or so, my eyes do feel a bit tired. Thanks again to all of you nice helpful folks. :)

I urge you in the strongest possible terms, do not purchase an ACER Aspire. It is their low end PC line. Please purchase an ACER Power if you are going to purchase an ACER system.
Most PC's do not come with modems becuase dial-up is dying. Most everyone is going to broadband (DSL & Cable).
I do not understand your fear of Newegg. They are one of the most if not the most reputable on-line resllers of computer systems, parts and accessories in the United States.

56K modems are the old way of connecting to the internet. Dial-up connects to the internet by basically having a computerized telephone inside your computer that dials a phone number to connect to the internet. This method of internet service is slow, has bloated software, and is relatively unreliable (in terms of getting disconnected after a period of inactivity or other dialing issues). In addition, FCC regulations regarding telephony signals limits the max transfer rate at 53K, not 56K.
Max dial-up speed = 53 Kbps (kilobits per second)
Most of us have now moved up to what's called "broadband" internet, which is really the blanket name for a bunch of non-dial-up services that provide faster, always-on internet service. This encompasses DSL in all its flavors (like aDSL) and cable internet service. DSL uses the extra bandwidth available in a telephone line at the higher frequencies (above 4KHz), which isn't part of the telephony signal spectrum. This allows much higher speeds and no need to dial-in because it isn't a telephone signal. Cable internet uses the extra bandwidth that is above the normal cable television spectrum within a coax cable. Both DSL and cable have external modems, and the modems plug into a computer using the network connection (aka LAN or ethernet or RJ45). All modern computers have this connection built-in, so those of us with this higher speed internet have no 56K modem in our computers. It's just an extra part that isn't needed, so we don't have one. Broadband internet speeds vary from 128K up to 8M (which is what my friend and I have), but the average is 1M.
Average broadband speed = 1Mbps = 1000 Kbps (kilobits per second)
My friend and I have an experimental cable internet service being tested in our area, so we have 8Mbit internet speed, which is 8000 Kbps. Compare this to your dial-up, which is 53 Kbps. So our internet speed is 151 times faster than yours. That's why there's not a single 56K modem in our entire house. And that's significant considering all the computers we have - 7 working, 4 unassembled.
That's a crash-course in internet services.

Hello:
You guys sure are great - I can't put into words how much I appreciate all the help and assistance I have received at this site. The machine recommended by Classic Software (Acer Power P5161 $547.99) is not carried by Tiger Direct. Tiger Direct is fairly close to my home and Tiger Direct has an Acer Power FE Intel Pent. 4 3.06 Ghz (HT) 512 MB DDR/ 80GB SATA HDD/DVD+ Windows XP Pro Desktop PC Item A180-2022 $599.99. Does this look like a good desktop to purchase?
Note to JimKeuing -- I truly appreciate your recommendation but The Acer Power 5160 has 256 memory and the Acer Power recommended by Classic Software has 512 mb. I think since I am about to get a new system that I will get the one with the most memory.
I am extremely appreciate to all of you! :)

Tiger Direct carries three Acer Desktops - Please tell me what you guys think and I really appreciatiate your recommendations and advice.
Acer Power FE Intel Pent. 4 3.06 Ghz (HT) 512 MB DDR 80 GB SATA HDD
DVD+RW Dual Layer Windows XP Pro $599.00.
Acer Veriton 6800 Intel Pent. D 830 #Ghz (Dual Core) 1GB DDR2 160GB SATA HDD $999.00
And of course they carry the Acer T650 - which one of you have advised me not to get as it is the low end.
Whatever system I get, I would have them put in the modem and floppy drive. :)
THANKS AGAIN!

The Acer Power Fe look like the best bet. They will have to add a modem and the warranty. Make sure you check the warranty carefully. Do you want the Warranty with Tiger Direct or with Acer? Let them explain the price difference and the service difference......

DVD burners are great. But would you use one? I use mine all the time for burning movies, and most importantly making backups of my windows drive and other data. Which is much better than using CD's that only have 700MB compared to 4.7GB on a single sided DVD. Dual layer DVD's are still to expensive. :(
I will say this, if there is one thing you should definitely learn to do, it is make backups of your computer. And a DVD burner can make that easier and less time consuming. ;)
saphalline
01-05-2006, 08:39 PM
Dual-layer DVD burners are standard now, even if the media isn't. And a DVD burner can do everything: read all CD's, burn all CD's, read all DVD's, burn all DVD's (except for DVD-RAM which isn't really supported anyway). So a dual-layer DVD burner is as good as it gets. And really, the drives themselves are so cheap that I would expect & demand a dual-layer DVD burner in any OEM computer that costs more than $600.
As for burning back-ups, DVD's can be of great help. Either the DVD-R's or the DVD+R's, which both hold about 4700MB. These are the equivalent of the standard CD-R's - you can burn them once. CD-RW's, DVD-RW's, and DVD+RW's are the ones you can burn and reburn multiple times (up to about 1000 times). Then there are the less supported dual-layer DVD formats, like DVD-R DL and DVD+R DL (aka DVD+R9), which hold up to 8500MB but are extremely expensive and hard to find right now.
As for the upgrades, ask them how much it would be to double the RAM. 1GB of RAM is always nice.

Hello to all!
I went to Tiger Direct near my home to purchase my Acer Power FE P4-3.06/512/80/DVD+RW/XPP Desktop Computer. They didn't have it in stock but told me that their Naperville location carried it. So drove to the Naperville location and purchased the following:
Acer Power FE P4-3.06/512/80/DVD+RW/XPP for $599.00
Acer A 179-1718 AL1722r 17 in Silv/Blk LDC Monitor $274.99

C13-4901 Corsair Value Select 512MB PC3200 DDR 40 42.99
1.44MB Floppy Disk Drive TCL-6000 BL Black 19.99
WACA 2 Yr 24 Hr Onsite Warranty H222-G-A1802022 229.00
I told the salesperson that I use SpyBot, AVG Grisoft Free, and Adaware but he recommended eTrust EZ Antivirus to me for $34.81. Does anyone think that I should get this - please advise.
Tiger Direct will install my modem, floppy drive, and double the memory to 1G for $50.00. They told me that my system should be ready for pick-up on Tuesday.
I am so grateful to all you folks who have helped me out. This is one of the best sites that I have found on the Internet and I am going to recommend it to my friends.

No I wouldn't. No reason to pay for something that you can get for free. And it works just as good or better. I think just about all the regulars around here use a free AV and FW.
My ISP actually gives away the full version of the eTrust EZ AV/FW suite to it's members, and I still use AVG free and free Kerio personal firewall. The pay versions of these programs are just bloated with stuff you or I will never use or want on our system. ;)
And BTW, many ISP's now give away at least a free AV if not a FW as well. So you would probably be buying something you can get for free anyway.

saphalline

I agree, the free versions work better and are less demanding on your system. The snazzy-looking pay versions you see in the stores are overpriced for what they give you. Avast and AVG are probably updated 2-3 times more often than most of the cheap AV software you can buy in the stores.
I suspect the salesperson is seeing how much you're buying and just trying to squeeze out a little more from you. ;) Either that or he/she doesn't know a lot about security and all the free & powerful programs that are available on the web. Heck, I still meet people who think they need to go to a store to buy things like driver updates and the latest version of DirectX! That stuff is available for free online and they don't even know it.
Ah well, there's only so many people I can tell on any given day.

:( Hi:
Picked up my new Acer Power FE desktop and every time I sign on, I get a message "Please burn Acer factory default backup disc. Don't put your system at risk - Burn it!"
Then underneath that it reads: Backup to optical device:
Underneath that it reads: 01 (E:\) HL-DT-ST DVDRRW GWA-4164B
Then it gives me the option to press "enter".
When I press enter - it reads
"Backup Info
Requires 4 blank CD's or one blank DVD
Please insert a blank disc to start burning
Remember to label this disc as backup # 1
Optical Device (E:\) HL-DT-ST DVDRRW 6WA-4164B
Well, I place a blank CD-RW Rewritable 1X-4X in the DVD drive in the computer, and I press enter, it pops out, and tells me to enter a blank CD in the drive.
Am I doing something wrong here or is there something wrong with my new computer. Maybe, I am trying to burn to an incorrect drive, do I need to type in another drive in order to proceed. PLEASE HELP, I AM SO CONFUSED.
Another question, there are four CDs in the box which came with my new computer. Disk 1 reads AcerPower FE Aspire T670 System CD and reads "The software included on this Recovery CD was pre-installed on your hard drive at the factory and may only be used for backup recovery of your Acer computer system- For distrubition with a new Acer only." Then Disk 2 is called a Recovery CD, then disk 3 is called Recovery CD, and Disk 4 Recovery CD as well. Does this mean that these four discs are a separate system recovery or restore disks and I do not have to worry about creating or burning myself. Thanks in advance from one very confused senior.  :(

Sorry this happened to you. :( It's probably the one drive in a thousand that was bad. Don't feel to bad though, I had the same thing happen with the last pre-built machine I bought. I went to make the backup disks, no go, bought a different brand of disks, still no go.
I would make the backup disks but I would wait until you get it setup the way you like it then do it.

Crestwood,
It does not seem as if this is the problem, but,
please try the following steps just to be sure:
left click on "START"
locate and left click on "MY COMPUTER"
a window will pop up. Loacate your DVD drive icon and RIGHT click on the icon.
a list will pop up next to your icon. look down to where it says "PROPERTIES"
left click on that word. a window will pop up with words (tabs) across the top
left click on the tab/word labeled "RECORDING".
Then make sure the box is checked next to "Enable CD recording on this drive"
If it is not checked left click in the box, a green check mark should appear. Then left click "Apply" and then left click "Ok".
That window should close.
Close the "My Computer" window.
Now try using/burning your disks.

It seems wierd to me that you get this message upon putting the CD in the drive. Can you view the contents of the CD using Windows Explorer? Try to open some things that way (hit windows key + E or right double-click on My compter on the desktop and navigate to the drive).
Even if you can use the drive in this manner, the fact is, your computer should not be doing that. Something is broken and needs to be fixed by Tiger Direct. It is my advice to call up your warranty and tell someone to fix that.

Hi to all: :)
I picked up the CD-R cds and I was able to backup my system on the first two cds without any problems. When I inserted CD #3 however, the drive popped out and I received a prompt to insert a CD - this happened about three or four times. I clicked on the help button, and then I was able to back up CD # 3 and # 4. So I believe that I now have my system backed up on four CD-Rs.
Another issue that I had, was I was unable to view the CD Users Guide/Quick Start CD which came in the carton with my LCD AL 1722 monitor. Someone provided a link to me for the manual and after downloading ADobe Acrobat 705, I am now able to view the manual on line.
All in all, I really like my new Acer FE Power Desktop. :)
I have downloaded AVG Grisoft, Ad-Aware and Spy-bot - how often is it a good idea to run these programs. Also, how often should I run scan disk and disk defrag?
Does anyone have any favorite sites that they like to visit on the web, if so, I would appreciate links. I like www.assignmenteditor.com for all sorts of useful info.
Thanks to all of you for all your help and God bless, :)

Make sure you use a firewall. I Personally prefer Sygate (http://www.sygate.com/firewall/) Though Symatec is no longer supporting it, I still think it's the best free firewall. Others also like Kerio Personal Firewall (http://www.kerio.com/kpf_download.html).
I also hope you are using Firefox (http://www.mozilla.com/firefox/) as your web browser.

Sheeeesh, sounds like you have had nothing but problems from the beginning. :( I am hesitant to take you through troubleshooting because if it needs to go back, which it sounds like it does, they will just do the same thing. And I don't want you to go through that twice.
I would say you need to call them up and tell them you have had nothing but problems and want a replacement. That's my opinion anyway. Lets see what the others opinions are though.
It's not that I don't want to help you, I just think it has had to many problems already for a guy that just wanted a machine to plug in and go.

Scan for viruses with AVG or Avast, which ever one you installed.
Rt Click on the Sygate Icon in the system try to left of the clock.
Choose applications.
Choose Remove all
Choose OK
Now you have re-set the firewall to ground zero. Now it will ask you each time something wants access. Since I assume your system is clean, evaluate each item before answering. If you are sure you want the item to be able to communicate with the outside world, click the remember my answer and click yes. If you are NOT sure, write down the full explanation and click on yes for now. Post here with the items and I will tell you of you should allow them or block them.

The answer is for now yes, but in the future you will have to evaluate each item. If you get a virus or a worm, it will attempt to use your Internet connection and Sygate can block it. So for now:
If you are not sure if you should let the program in question access the network say yes and DO NOT check the box that says remember my selection. Write down the exact message and post it back here and we will tell you if you need to do it permanently.
If you ARE sure you should let the program in question access the network say yes and DO check the box that says remember my selection.

Sorry, I thought the Wikipedia definitions might help. In simple terms, ripping is the process of extracting a song and placing it on one's harddrive. Burning is the process of taking the song from the harddrive and placing it onto CD disk media.

We can use the CD drives in our computers to play music, but this does not place the songs onto our harddrives. If we elect to record the song to our harddrive this would be "ripping."
If you desire then, you can play the songs without inserting the original music CD. There are software programs that compress the music so that it doesn't take up so much space. You might ask, what is compression?
In a paragraph of text, for example, there are many groupings of letters that commonly occur (e.g.,th, or ing, or tion). In the case of the suffix tion, rather than storing 4 separate values for each of the letters, the compression software might say, "every time I see this grouping of letters I'm going to use these symbols %&." The software has now condensed/compressed the 4 separate letter values down to 2. Over hundreds of paragraphs, this could be quite a saving of storage space. Compression softwares use a "formula" referred to as an "algorithm" that performs a similar analysis of what is being saved/stored and effectively compresses the information/data. The same is true for music storage such as Mp3...

Gosh, I had no idea that I would be able to put a CD in my drive and that I could then "rip"/copy the songs from this CD to my computer for future playing. This is great. Thanks so much for telling me about this. I had the Emachines for six years and I never realized that I was so limited as to what I could do having that machine. If you can think of any other things that I can do with my new Acer Power PE Desktop, I would be most grateful. Thanks again, and have a great day! :)

Hi: How does a webcam work? Is it difficult to install and operate?
Another question please, and this is important - I love my Acer AL1722 LCD 17inch monitor but it seems like after viewing it for about one half hour or so, my eyes feel fatigued and I get off the computer. PLEASE ADVISE ABOUT WHAT I CAN DO ABOUT THIS IF ANYTHING - IS THERE ANOTHER MONITOR THAT WOULD BE EASIER ON THE EYES FOR A SENIOR? Thanks so very much. Everyone on this Forum is Super Nice! :) :)

As a spectacle wearer myself, I know the importance of regular eye checks. I suggest that you visit an optician, and explain the problem. He will probably be able to suggest something.

Actually, I moved the LCD monitor further away from my sitting position to help my eyes when I transitioned from CRT to LCD. If you can touch the screen you are positioning it too close.

I moved mine about 2 inches further than I can reach, seems to make a lot of difference in eye strain. Also running the LCD at native resolution is best.

Exactly correct. The next thing you need to do is raise the resolution. What are you operating at now.....

Hi Classic, so good to see you back on this forum - everyone at this forum is so kind and helpful but I have missed your posts!
I went to Display Properties -
Under Plug and Play Monitor: on Intel(R) 82915G/GV/910GL Express Chipset Famikly.
Under Screen Resolution: 1024 by 768 pixels.
Under Color Quality: Highest (32 bit)
Classic, I recently learned on this forum that I could copy "rip" songs from a CD to my desktop - I never knew I could do this and really appreciate the info. If you can give me more suggestions as to what else I can do with my new desktop, I would be very grateful. Thanks much.

Classic - I meant to include this attachment with last post (showing what my screen resolution is) - I hope the attachment shows up. I hit the windows/print screen key and then saved in paint.

1280 x 1024 is native resolution on my Acer display. Raise it to that setting like Classic suggests.

Sir: Are you saying that I should raise my resolution from 1024 X 768 to 1280 X 1024 - if so, may I please get easy step by step instructions on how to proceed? Thanks so much.

yes,
minimize the browser window and any other windows, right-click on any open area of the desktop, choose Properties.
Go to Settings tab, change resolution to the requested setting and Apply.
The screen resolution change will change margins, just push the Auto button on the Acer display and the display margins should again fill the screen.

I don't think you need the speed booster, but it would not kill you to get it.

Hi Classic: What is the Speed Booster??
I am learning more and more with my Acer Desktop. I downloaded the Madonna Song "Hung up" from Walmart for 88 cents and then transferred it to a CD so now I can play the song in my car. Pretty neat!

That post was meant for another thread. That's what happens when you post late at night.
I'm glad you are enjoying your PC.
Do you do your checking account on the PC? If not you should play with Quicken. It's a great program.

Hi Classic: I have a question for you. I have a song which I downloaded from Walmart on a CD - if I place another song on that same CD will the song which is presently on the CD be erased? Is there a way to place one song after another on a CD without erasing? Thanks.

Not unless you erased the CD first. I'm pretty sure if you burn a CD in the form that will play in a regular player, you will NOT be able to add to it. I could be very wrong about that.

You are correct. When you burn music to a CD it finalizes the burn, essentially sealing the disc.

CD players in our automobiles are not designed to read CD-Rs that are not "closed." Nor, can they read CDRWs. You can set up CD-Rs to be multi-session (being able to add data or additional songs), but again, they cannot be read by the auto CD players.
So, if you want to record a disk for your auto, you need to have everything available for a one session record...

Hi Guys: Thanks for answering my question. So in other words I cannot add more songs to that CD-R as it is sealed, I have to do all the burning at one time before it is sealed. Incidentally, I took the CD out to my car yesterday and placed it in the Honda Civic CD and it played fine.
Another question for you. For some reason, I cannot open my email this morning. When I click on my new email, I get the egg timer, and then I get a message "this is taking longer than usual and please click on OK - if the problem persists, please go to Keyword: System Response and report the problem". I have Walmart dial up service. HELP PLEASE.

So in other words I cannot add more songs to that CD-R as it is sealed, I have to do all the burning at one time before it is sealed.Correctomundo! :) If, let's say, you have created a file you've named crestwood's all time favorites. Into this file you've been ripping songs that you've been remembering as remembering worthy.
Today, you decide you've been dying to see the world's largest ball of twine. On the drive you're going to want to listen to your "all time favorites." You burn them to disk and finalize the session. Then, you hear the Eagles' new song, Hole in the World and you want that on your favorites CD also...
The solution, if there was yet room on a CD to hold the new addition, would be to add it to the ripped 'all time favorites' file and burn a new disk.
In answer to your second question: Sometimes you may just need to shutdown and reboot. With the thousands and thousands of files that load each time we load Windows, or our operating systems, the chance for a possible error is ever present. Oft times, a simple reboot is the simplest fix...
It could also be Walmart's servers were having problems... Later today the problem may disappear...
