Hoi,
I've a question from my son. Before I've re-install win ME my son played often a game on the internet. There was no problem to play it. But after the re-install (to solve the problem with windows/restore)the game doesn't work so good as before. Many times the game freeze for a few second and that's not nice when someone is shooting at you in the game. Someone has told me that the problem can be the "cach-memory". Is that true ? Would the problem be gone when I raise the cach-memory (if that's possible) ?
Or should it be a other problem ?

A man with a lot of PC-problems.
Hans.

hello
you can try getting a program called cache man its free on some m.e machines it works fine at helping free ram.but freeing ram is not the same as system resourcse.you might want to help free up some resorces by right clicking any unneeded programs that are listed in the task bar beside the clock.right click on them chose close.if your on line keep virus scanner going.you can allso use ctrl, alt, delete to remove more but you must leave exploer and system tray running.you can allso use the closeing programs in task bar and ctrl, alt, delete be for shuting computer off to save on system freeze ups with m.e.
anther thing you can do is click on windows buton (beside alt key)and pause brake key .this will get you into the divice manager.you want to look for ware you have computer is and in a box it will say computer is normaly used as "desk top" change this to server it will give you 30%lager cache for system resources.
you may allso want to delete your temperay inter net files one a week or so and go into them through windows explorer and manualy delete them once a month if you manualy delete any temp folders save them in yout trash fot a week or two in case windows wants them back.
this is a start let me know how its working
have a nice day

You probably also "reinstalled" some things back into msconfig..startup..items that eat resources. We worked on an ME puter not too long back that had a bunch of unnecessary things loading, and sometimes turning them off by the Con-Alt-Del method doesn't free up the resources..so better to not have them load at Startup.

Things can turn off in msconfig and help for doing that..Whidbey.net (http://www2.whidbey.net/djdenham/Running_items.htm) and a slightly more comprehensive list of things needed or not is Mike's StartUp list (http://mikescomputerinfo.com/startup.htm)

Thanks guys !
This is useful information wich I gonna read this evening ! I think to know what's the reason why the online-game sometimes stacks. The PING-value is much higher than the other online-players. But what meens PING ?
Hans.

I believe that means that someone is trying to probe your ports, and I remember a thread on this very subject...probing disrupting game play. But I cannot find it. Hopefully, one of our gamers will check in on this.

That's my character fragging your boy!! http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/tongue.gif LOL!

Heh, i use PING as a character in Quake III and Eliteforce.

But seriously, PING { which stands for Packet Internet Groper=PING } is a simple net tool that servers ( and sometimes unscrouplus people ) use to check your connection speed; the lower the better. Nothing to be alarmed about, it's general practice for all online game servers to " Ping " you so that players can see your connection speed anddetermine if the want to be lagged with you. http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/wink.gif

You can use this utility to check your on network cards responsiveness ( type PING 127.0.0.1 at a DOS prompt to check your own network connection-that's a reserved default IP address for local network cards ) or type PING { address of your favorite website here ] and see just how fast a connection you have to the site; for example:

Packets: Sent = 4, Received = 4, Lost = 0 (0% loss),
Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:
Minimum = 73ms, Maximum = 81ms, Average = 75ms

I'm on broadband ( cable ) so as you can see i get pretty good " Ping's ",and if you'll also notice you can see Google's exact IP address ( in bold ).

You can use either the exact IP address if you know it, or the domain name.

Tell your son to check his connection, specifically drivers for your modem, these can affect your performance.

And tell him to not stand still, they don't call it a " Dead stop " for nothing! http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/tongue.gif

I've re-install the drivers of the ethernetcard.
So, let's hope it will work out.
Thanks, anyway.
