View Full Version : upgrade my cd-rw?

I was wondering if newer, faster cd-rw's are better at recording than my 2x6x2x HiVal drive. It messes up about one out of four audio cd's, and about the same with data. I upgraded my source cdrom drive to a 48x, so I didn't think buffer overruns were the prob.
I was reading about the drive in a test, and they said that a SCSI source drive was key for error-free duping. By the way, the machine is a P233.
I guess I'm asking a bunch of things here, but one last one...If I were to buy a new machine (P3900) would it be worth it to install my cdr drive in it, or just to buy a new one?
Sorry for the length, and thanks

Some of the other folks may have better advice, but I'm a bit skeptical about "faster" where CD burners are concerned, since the most common advice is to burn as slow as possible to get the best successful copy rate. If you're making a lot of coasters, slow it down...
Copying from a hard drive instead of directly from CD ROM seems to be preferred as well. That means keeping close to a gig of free space on a drive for a "Copy from" folder...But it gets better results.
Stay tuned for other comments...I'm sure you'll get 'em...

Thanks for the info Pete:
What is your take on SCSI cdroms? Why do no new systems seem to come with them. Specifically, I'm looking at Dell 4100's to replace my old HP. Do you think the drives on a new machine will be able to extract digital audio fast enough to ensure good copy?

I just recently bought a new burner I had a Acer 2x2x6 was slow but did the job at nice success rates till it died on me after 3 years of use. New one I bought is a HP 8x4x32 and I love it I have only made 2 Costers so far on about 100 burns and was my fault as well tried to open other software while burning and got buffer underrun. I manly burn audio CDs but also do data. Takes 10 min to burn a full 74 min CD from I beleave the old 2x was around 45 min.
I havent done many CD to CD I recomend cacheing it on the HD first may take longer but much higher success rate. Also the CDs I use with the HP are Memorex easy to write on and get the CDs and case in 10 packs for $10 CND best deal on CDs ive found so far Spindles still only around $30 for 50 and best off all no probs with them yet.
