Does anyone have any interesting ones?

I have just bought some new equipment myself and I am looking at at least a 20% performance improvement and a 50% reduction in noise.

My current specs are:

Intel P4 3.0Ghz 800FSB
2x512MB PC2700 DDR RAM (non dual channel)
ASUS P4P800S-X
GeForce 6600 256MB AGP
2 x standard coolermaster case fans

My future specs will be:

same CPU
2x1GB PC3200 DDR RAM
same mobo
XFX Geforce 6800LE (will be softmodded after initial tests and the zalman vf700-cu will be used)
2 x akasa amber 120mm case fans
silicon gaskets and rubber screws will be applied to
all case fans, hdd's, and optical drives

Essentially, I am upgrading my pc to the components it should of had before, but i didn't have the money top spend. The plus point is that it looks as though I'll make between 60-100 pounds of the money back from selling the RAM and card on ebay.

I am going to benchmark before and after and post my results here... there shouldn't be anything surprising, but the actual increase in performance with regards to cost interests me a lot, for obvious reasons!!

I have very intersesting benchmarks:

3DMark 2005.......0

3DMark 2003.......0

3Dmark 2001.......1270

My current system specs are below and they aren't too far from yours, but it'll be diffenetly higher:

3DMark01 = 14,500

3DMark03 = 8,500

3DMark05 = 3,300

Performance Test 6.0 = 430

I'd recommend a 6800 GS instead of an LE. The LE version has only 8 pipes, the same as your current 6600 GT. The 6800 GS has 12 pipes and is often the same price as the LE.

The other vid card I'd recommend in that price range is the Radeon X800 GTO. Very similar in performance to the 6800 GS, and it also has 12 pipes and a 256-bit memory bus width.

That's true, but I am intending on soft-modding the LE card to turn on as many extra pipelines as possible. The GS versions are also softmoddable. There should be a couple of vertex shaders that can be turned on too.

Whether all the extra pipelines and vertex shaders will be working is another thing, but the LE offers 8x4, the GS offers 12x6, and the GT is 16x6. All I need is 30 fps at decent detail settings in Oblivion and I'll be happy.

I contemplated the X800GTO2 (for softmodding reasons too), but the lack of OpenGL optimisation and pixel shader 3.0 was a turn off.

EDIT: With regards to price, the LE card costs £105, but the GS card is £178 and the X800 is in between. That's from scan.co.uk.

Unfortunately, I have had to cancel my order form Scan.co.uk. After charging my card and saying all items were in stock, when it came to the day of delivery i got an mail saying that 2 of the items weren't actually in stock and that i had to wait another week. Pathetic. I have already logged complaints with them and with the consumer right's authority here. I'm a bit peeved.

Now I am here with a pc with no RAM or graphics card (as I sold them on ebay). The mobo has no onboard video so I am lost. Thank God for this trusty laptop from the turn of the century!

Anyway, I am now going to wait for enough cash to build a new system. *Mutter*
