View Full Version : Can't send an email
Hi Folks
I'm not sure where this thread fits in but I'll try here. I'm not able to send emails but can receive them. I have disabled McAfee on my computer and even uninstalled it but the problem remains.
My wife has a Dell notebook (just a few months old) which is wireless and she is having the same problem. The problem seemed to come suddenly.
The folks at my ISP went through my outlook express settings and everything seems to be in order. Any ideas?
Your input would be much appreciated
Thanks

Could be a corrupted Internet Explorer with the associated Outlook Express. Try uninstalling from the Add/Remove programs, then reinstall.
Could it be my ISP since my wifes notebook can't send them either?

Just curious; Which ISP are you using?

Two different PCs that can receive but can suddenly no longer send emails using Outlook Express points to the smtp mail protocol being blocked somewhere outside the two computers. So yes, which ISP, and how do the two computers make an internet connection. Have you by any chance actually changed your ISP and are still using the previous one's email settings. Is the system giving you any specific messages or other information.
Most ISP mail services can also be accessed using WebMail so if that is the case you might check to see if you can send messages directly from their website.
Happy New Year!
Hey Sassie05, we are using ACS a locally owned company (here in western Colorado) that has been in the works since 1989. Very nice folks.
Thanks Paul..... we just moved two months ago to a new house and did change ISP. We had Bresnan and now have ACS. The area we live in has internet service provided in each house by ACS. Its an ethernet system that all the homes in this subdivision have. So I'm not sure if they have some type of antenna that feeds this area.
The folks at ACS went through outlook express with me, setting everything up so I don't think there is anything in there from the previous ISP (Bresnan)
This is the message I get when I try to send an email ( after a mimute or so )
Your server has unexpectedly terminated the connection. Possible causes for this include server problems, network problems, or a long period of inactivity. Subject 'test', Account: 'xmail.acsol.net', Server: 'xmail.acsol.net', Protocol: SMTP, Port: 25, Secure(SSL): No, Error Number: 0x800CCC0F
I'll have to look into the web mail...not sure how to do that
Thanks again

This is most likely a problem with the router. You will need to contact the manufacturer of the router and make adjustments in the firmware or PC settings to accomodate the wireless. If you have a Linksys router:

Use the WebMail link at the top of http://www.acsol.net/ to log on.
You can choose normal or enterprise depending on the type of account you have.
It could be a router but one wonders what happend to bring about the change in access and why the message is that the server has terminated tha connection.
Are you running any Norton NAV or NIS - if so see http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/nav.nsf/docid/2001060516275506
If you are running Windows 2000 it could be the size of the messages and the need to apply a service pack - see http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;816866
... and a resume of the error from Tiscali (http://www.tiscali.co.uk/help/email/oe_errors_0x800ccc0f.html)
Thanks Classic!
I have a D-link (DI-624) wireless router I bought from Dell when I got my wifes notebook. Emails were working fine until about 2 weeks ago. Could a router problem come on suddenly?
Thanks

Hey Paul
I'm not able to get my password to work on the webmail, so I'll have to wait until Tuesday when they (ACS) open back up. If I can send an email on the webmail what does that mean about my problem?
Thanks

I dont know that it tells you a lot about your problem but it might allow you to send some emails if that was something you wanted to do. If it doesnt send then there is something seriously wrong with the ACS server.
If you have a dial-up modem perhaps you could try a direct dial-up and see if you can send that way. If it worked it point the finger at the wireless/router since it should take the mail server and any firewall etc out of the equation.
You might also consider trying Thunderbird or another Mail Client instead of OE to help exclude a corrupted OE as the cause. Though having said that - it would be odd to have two PCs affected by the same corrupt software at the same time.
Thanks Paul!!! I downloaded Thunderbird and my emails are working! I also downloaded it on my wifes notebook but I lost her password so I'll need to contact ACS tomorrow. Isnt it strange the both our computers could have a problem with OE?
Thanks

Yes - strange. But then computers (however logical) can be strange beasts.
At least you know the problem lies with a corrupt/corrupted update/blocked Outlook Express.
One thing we didn't try was to compact all the OE folders. This is however usually done for a corrupt inbox rather than a corrupt outbox.
