I'm using an HP 514n computer, and I have a CD-RW/DVD ROM drive (PHILIPS CDD5301), however, it is not reading my DVDs. Sometimes, they are read, but when the DVDs are played, I get distortion and freeze ups at certain points in the movie. And, I'll get points in the movie where the drive just stops working. The discs are clean (or brand new). Background programs? I checked. I use SpyWare Doctor and Symantec AntiVirus. I turn SpyDoctor off before trying to watch a movie. I know the drive works. I tried googling the maker of both the computer and the drive, but I haven't found anything useful. I had an OS preloaded beforehand (XP Home), but I have XP Pro on the computer now. I have the appropriate decoders to run DVDs but they don't work - on ocassion. Do I have a bad drive? I hope that isn't the answer. As I said, the drive does work occassionally. Am I missing a setting somewhere or do I have to turn Symantec off too to run movies?

Freeze ups in all movie play? Any problem with music CDs?
DMA enabled on the drive?

Ayuh, freeze ups and lock ups ( :) ). I'm thinking maybe the lens is dirty, but CDs and Data CDs work fine. And, the DVDs work sometimes, if I coerce the computer somehow. I also upped my page files to 512MB and I'm still having the same problems.
DMA? I'll look at my Device Manager. Am I looking in the IDE controllers for this option? There are none listed in DVD/CD-RW. Thank you for the tip. :)
Also, if you're a gamer, does the system freeze, crash, etc., when playing intense games?
If so, then make sure the video card is fully seated.
If that's ok, then it may be overheating. Remove the computer's cover, and run an external fan. If that fixes things, then the system needs either additional or more powerful cooling fans.
Also, what are the system and CPU temperatures?
