network problem in class

now i m having a problem on this network in class right,
one computer has amd cpu 2200+ 256mb of ram
the problem is its not detect the settings for some reason
same problem with another computer but its has windows 2000 and that system say thats its offline but i check and its not.
so can anybody lead me in the right way

not without more information we can't. what settings are you talking about? what os are you running on both? how are they connected: through a router? crossover cable? is this problem a networking class assignment?
