This is a stupid question but should a fan inside the case blow air into the case or blow it outside?

Depends on where it is. Common case design is to have the front case fans at the bottom blow air into the case, and rear case fans blow air out of the case. In addition, side fans typically blow in, and top fans blow out. But these are just generic guidelines. Your specific case layout and internal airflow might need fans blowing in different directions. But if you have a standard ATX type case with standard parts, just follow the guidelines.
