Wish to purchase a new mike for PC to use with telephone call via the web. What do I need to look for in a mike. The one I got with PC does not perform well.

If I was buying a microphone for the application you just described, I'd get a headset type. I don't have one, I've got an Telex M-40 that comes with a little stand. This is an inexpensive unidirectional (that doesn't pick up background noise) and works fine for making self-study audio cassette tapes.

The reason I'll probably get a headset type some day: To get sufficient signal strength on my tape recorder's VU meters, I need to stack my microphone on top of something else so that the mic is six to eight inches away from my mouth (I'm not a short person).

Another advantage of a headset mic with Internet phone use is that it doesn't pick up the sound coming out of the speakers and create an echo. The speaker is in the earpiece and the sound doesn't make it to the mic. If you plan to use the mic for Internet phone, it's a hassle, but get a headset type, and switch it with the speakers before making phone calls. The echo is a nuisance when you use a stand type mic.

The only headset mics I have used have both been Labtec, and worked very well. Wally World usually has them for under $15, or you can check other retail stores too.
