Winfixerscannerinstall.exe. PLEASE HELP!

Hi,

Please can someone offer some guidance? I am far from being a computing genius, but I have read that this Winfixerscannerinstall thing isn't too good. Every time I boot up, it is giving me an "Open File - security warning", asking if I want to run the file. I can't see it anywhere in my directories, it seems to be in a file that doesn't exist.

I have also run Spybot, Microsoft Antispyware, and Ad Aware but these have not touched it.

Please can someone guide me through it?

You will need to use a couple more tools to sort this out... First:

Please download, install, and update the NEW free version of Ewido trojan scanner (http://www.ewido.net/en/download/):

When installing, under "Additional Options" uncheck "Install background guard" and "Install scan via context menu".

When you run ewido for the first time, you may get a warning "Database could not be found!". Click OK. We will fix this in a moment.

From the main ewido screen, click on update in the left menu, then click the Start update button.

After the update finishes (the status bar at the bottom will display "Update successful")

Click on the Scanner button in the left menu, then click on Complete System Scan. This scan can take quite a while to run.

Check "Perform action with all infections".

When the scan finishes, click on "Save Report". This will create a text file. Make sure you know where to find this file again.


Then submit a HijackThis log:

To run HJT, extract it to a permanent folder such as one
you create like C:\HJT. Close all open windows and
browsers and make sure that all programs are enabled if
you use msconfig. Run it and Scan, then Save the log.
When the log window appears, Right click to Copy it, open
your browser and come here to Paste the entire log. Do
not make any changes until it is checked since most items
are either benign or essential to the computer.

Welcome back... you are going to need to turn off the resident protection in MS Anti-Spyware and TeaTimer in order to complete the fixes... They will block some of them if you don't...

Open Microsoft AntiSpyware.
Click on Tools, Settings.
In the left pane, click on Real-time Protection.
Under Startup Options uncheck Enable the Microsoft AntiSpyware Security Agents on startup (recommended).
Under Real-time spyware threat protection uncheck Enable real-time spyware threat protection (recommended).
After you uncheck these, click on the Save button and close Microsoft AntiSpyware.
Right click on the Microsoft AntiSpyware icon on the taskbar and select Shutdown Microsoft AntiSpyware.

Then TeaTimer:
1) Run Spybot-S&D
2) Go to the Mode menu and make sure "Advanced Mode" is selected
3) On the left hand side, choose Tools -> Resident
4) Uncheck "Resident TeaTimer" and OK any prompts
5) Restart your computer.

Also, you are running 2 malware programs that are dubious...

SpywareCleaner is considered rogue and uses false reports to get you to purchase it... I suggest going to Add/Remove Programs and get rid of it...

AdwareAlert was recently removed from the rogue list because they cleaned up their act, but I would still not trust it and I recommend removing it as well...

Next, please download CCleaner and use it to clear Temporary folders:

Then open an HJT scan and put checks by any of these that remain:

Hi Budfred, here is the log I have just run on HijackThis. I was a little confused when you said

I managed to delete ALCMTR but the second one is still evident in the report, although I checked and cleaned it. The pop up window on restart seems to have disappeared anyway.

Hi Budfred, here is the log I have just run on HijackThis. I was a little confused when you said

I managed to delete ALCMTR but the second one is still evident in the report, although I checked and cleaned it. The pop up window on restart seems to have disappeared anyway.What I meant was to open Windows Explorer and find the folders, then delete the file in the first one and the folder in the second one....

Did you opt to keep SpywareCleaner and AdwareAlert?? If not, we need to clean them out of the HJT log...

Use HJT to fix this again:

Hi Budfred,
I located ALCMTR in Windows Explorer and deleted it. The problem with the Q13CLORE folder is that a) it doesn't appear to exist, and b) when I select it to be cleaned/deleted on HijackThis, it still appears in the resulting log.

I have now removed the 2 rogue spyware programs, sorry I thought I had successfully done this yesterday. Here is the new log just compiled:

We can try a multi-pronged approach... I am assuming you have already run CCleaner and that folder is still there, so it is probably protected in some way...

First, set Windows to show hidden files and see if you can find it and delete it...

In Windows XP, on the taskbar, click Start > My Computer.
In Windows Me/2000/XP, on the Tools menu, click Folder Options.
On the View tab, uncheck Hide file extensions for known file types.
In Windows Me/2000/XP, uncheck Hide protected operating system files. Then, under the "Hidden files" folder, click Show hidden files and folders.
If you see a warning message, click Yes.
Click Apply.
Click OK.

Then fix it with HJT:

Then copy/paste that entire file with path into a Notepad file so that you can access it in Safe Mode... Boot to Safe Mode (tap F8 just before Windows starts loading and select Safe Mode)... Choose the "Delete on reboot" and "End Explorer Shell while Killing file" options... Copy/paste the entire item into the line for the file... Then click through to kill it... Then go back and see if you can delete the folder...

Reboot and post a fresh HJT log... If it is still there, we will need to go to some other scans...

It still appears in HJT scans, and Kill Box can't find it. When I look through Windows Explorer having selected "show hidden files", the file called "Content.IE5" doesn't exist. I don't understand how it still shows on a HJT scan?

Is it safe to assume that any unwanted elements have already been deleted or should I still continue until the HJT scan log is clear?

Sorry this has dragged on, but your help is much appreciated!

If it is still showing in HJT, it is probably being reinstalled by some file that protects it... That program may be MS AntiSpyware since it still seems to be running:

Please go back to my second post and use the instructions to shut MSAS down... Then try fixing that item in HJT again... If it is still there, we will need to try some other scans... Here they are, but don't use them if that thing is clear:
