Hi guys, Happy New Year.. A problem that I'm sure a few of you will recognize instantly ( I don't; hence the post ).

I have two Dell Dimension xpr 5100 towers standing right next to each other.. Both running Windows XP...I want to change from one to the other..The one I'm switching to has not been used in a while..

Proceeded to switch the power from one to the other, also the monitor cord, and the mouse and key cords...

Computer powered up. heard 3 beeps and the microbeep...however monitor would not come on ( I know that it works )..switched video graphics cards (because I knew the one I was putting in worked)...still computer powers up..but no monitor or key board activity...I haven't put a ton of thought into this yet and wanted to get a quick apprisal from the gurus..

Thanks much, :)

Removed and reinstalled RAM. Disconnected mouse and keyboard. Computer BOOTED UP properly. However, upon reconnecting mouse and keyboard, neither work ?

Please advise, M

try one by one,, keyboard first, if it dosent work try the mouse but one by one, if no one works try USB keyboard if you have one

the only way to find out if the ps2 conections are bad is pluging the USB keyboard or mouse.. here is another shoot, try clearing the Bios, ps2 ports could be desable, clearing the bios brings up the default settings, easy's way to cleare the bios is removing the battery in wait a few minutes and put it back. dont forget to desconect the power cord...

However, upon reconnecting mouse and keyboard,...

Were they reconnected while the computer was plugged in or powered on? Plugging in or unplugging PS/2 mouse or keyboard while the computer is powered up can and often will damage the PS/2 port or the device, doing so while it is plugged in can damage the port or device but usually won't. Some motherboards still have low level power available when plugged in but turned off, that's enough current to damage both PS/2 and AGP ports.

Either can be confirmed by testing them on the other computer, or a different one that is known to work properly, the port can be tested by trying a different known working keyboard and mouse. In this case it might not be conclusive, since it hasn't been booted up and run enough to know for sure everything was right to begin with.

Oddly enough, I abandoned project until this morning and upon an additional reboot devices are working properly !

Thanks much guys ! I have another question about loading a driver for wireless w/o the CD ROM, but I'll take it to approrpriate threadlist.
