Heres a good one, I use Kaza regularly. Problem is I just got a cable ISP and installed Zone Alarm Pro. Now Kaza no longer works. I double click the icon and nothing happens. But when I shutdown ZoneAlarm, it works fine. I dont like the idea of leaving my firewall down for an hour or more to get the latest mp3s, so i turn to you all for help. http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/cool.gif

Never used Kazaa, but i'm sure there is an option in it to check if you're using a firewall and to endable it { outside connections } to pass through. If you can't find it in the Kazaa program, you'll have to configure ZA to allow connection's to come thru-seems i remember seeing a post on a forum awhile back concerning this, i suggest you take a look at Kazaa's FAQ site to see if this subject has been raised.

Ive checked all the FAQs for both pieces of software. Nothing mentioned. The problem isnt it not getting through. I all ready set up the options to allow Kazaa to pass the firewall. Its just that when ZA is running, I cant even get Kazaa to start. NOTHING happens when I click to start the program. But when ZA is shutdown it starts just fine. I dont know. I know its probably something simple but Im too frustrated to think of it.

In the ZA programs you have to allow Kazaa full access to the internet also allowing it to act as a server and maybe even pass lock privileges

yes you do have to allow it server and internet privileges, however you do NOT want it to "Pass Lock".
Passlock- is in order to STOP everything from connecting, think of it like the Emergency Brake on your vehicle- why would you want to have it not work??
'idiom'- "well, I thought it would be ok to go on down that hill full speed and no way to stop!"
IMO nothing should be allowed to "Passlock".

If nothing else give Sygate firewall a try, it seems to be an equal if not better program to me and has never given me any problems.

have you tried loading kaza and then zone alarm? Did ZA ask you for anything different then, and did kaza suddenly die once you loaded zonealarm?

perhaps you would like to try using AD AWARE to remove all of the SPYWARE - cydoor, onflow sub, and GOD only knows what else they throw in this.
It's a REAL contradiction wanting your cake and eat it too- if ZA won't even let the thing open then that should tell you to either modify the program or NOT USE IT.
or use it and be willing to accept the possible consequences.

I did try to load Kazaa then ZA, but ZA will not work after Kazaa is running. Also, I am aware of the "spy ware" that is supposedly running behind the sceens of Kazaa but it worked out just fine with the free version of ZA. I am running ZA Pro. I am aware of the settings for the banners and killing spyware, but I set them all to little to none and it still wont even load. Besides, I thought ZA was just supposed to block net traffic, not take over your PC. We forget, the program wont even load up with ZA running. So its not a matter of letting it gain access to the network. Its a matter of NOTHING happening when I double click the icon. NOTHING at all. No little hour glass saying please wait. No error message warning me I did something my computer doesnt agree with. No twitch of the screen to signifie a program is loading in the background. And nothing at all in the task manager that may indicate the program failed on startup. If ZA has this much control over my PC perhaps they need to mention that to those who use it. Like maybe this program may develope a mind of its own and not allow you to do those things on your PC you would like to do. http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/rolleyes.gif

did you already pay for the ZA Pro?
if not go back to the free version.
I wouldn't blame ZA because you want to run hazardous programs on your machine that try to defeat the purpose of a firewall to begin with, instead you would be best served trying different settings to get it to work. The SPYWARE is NOT "suppose to be" it is there, are there any FORUMS of people that use the kazaa program that you use??
What I mean is since ZA and kazaa BOTH are very popular it seems there would be some support.
you may want to see this (http://www.wired.com/news/privacy/0,1848,49430,00.html), this (http://www.thiefware.com/info/), and this (http://www.cre8pc.com/dumpscum.html).
a firewall is there to PROTECT you, if these two things are not working together then you either didn't have your settings correct on the last version of ZA (when it worked) and incorrectly configured (possibly) to allow kazaa to work- or now (where it may be correct and ZA is just doing it's J.O.B (-ie,- protecting you from you).
In any event if you choose a program known for security risks rather than a program that STOPS security risks than you may want to re-examine your priorities.
ya don't abandone a parachute because it gets in your way!

Im not going to stop using my firewall. I am way smarter than that. I do know a thing or two about computers. I would give up Kazaa over my firewall. But I figured if someone out there knew of a fix for this problem I had maybe they would be nice enough to help me out and I would not be ridiculed or treated like a child for doing something on MY computer that I wanted to. I appreciate everyone for thier input and thoughts. That is what this forum is about. But I do know what a firewall is and the importance of one. I was just looking to see if others had this same problem.
Like was mentioned earlier, both of these are very popular programs and allot of people use them. Spy ware or not.
My thought on the matter is, if the big companies feel like wasting millions of dollars to track my compter use, let them. All they will find is my kids visiting barbie.com or me visiting my favorite sites. Heck, if they ask Ill tell them for free. Everything of importance on my system is password protected and encrypted, so if they get that info they realy wanted it and there would be nothing I could do to stop them anyway. If a hacker or spyware realy wants something it will get it. There is nothing we can do to stop them. We can make it harder. But sheltering ourselves form these so called BAD programs will only slow them down. Its like staying inside because they say there is pack of killer drivels on the loose in Canada. Why sit around inside if those drivels are no where near you?
Dont ask me what a drivel is, I have no clue. But the meaning is the same. Spyware isnt all that bad. Its not going to take over your pet goldfish and make it a money stealing killer. It may track your internet use. And if you are afraid of what they may find, you may fear the FBI more.

my intention was not to insult you.
the following statement:
Besides, I thought ZA was just supposed to block net traffic, not take over your PC.
led me to a possibly incorrect conclusion that you were perhaps unaware of the reason why kazaa won't open when ZA is on.
let me explain.
I am thinking that an element within the kazaa software (the instant kazaa tries to load) wants to do something that you have not given permission to in ZA, maybe something (a tracking element or whatever) that they don't even want you to know is there. So it would possibly be very hard for you to allow it since you don't know what it is.
on the other hand, you may think I was being a wiseguy but I actually spent an hour looking around to see if anyone else has the same type problem that you are and could not find one instance.
I was a happy morpheus user until they forgot to pay their bill to the dutch company, and now the Oz company.

Hoi,
This is my Belgium meaning. (escuse me for ma bad English). A long time ago I used KAZAA. Nothing else than troubles with my firewall (symantec). So after I had a serious crache with my PC, I have re-installed all my stuff without KAZAA. Now I use winMX and BEARSHARE to download everthing. I have no problems with my firewall whene running the 2 programs.
I hope this may be a solution for you.
Hans.

Sorry if I came acrossed as an ass. I do appreciate the help everyone is lending. I mainly wanted a discussion to see if anyone else was having the same trouble. I too spent a better part of a day trying to figure this out and no leads for me either. So I am now to believe these two do not like and work well together. So Kazaa is history.
Thanks again for all the help. Sorry Sea69 for lashing out. I just wanted to point out that I do have extensive computer knowledge and am aware of how things work. BTW, thanks for the input on why it wont open. Shows I still have somethings to learn.

Have you tried the different program authentification options under security in ZA?
