Please can anyone tell me which one is a better processor between the AMD 1.8Mhz Sempron and the Intel IV 2.0Mhz. I am running a tight budget so that's all I can afford for the moment.
Thank you.

what's better to eat, an apple or a pear?

neither is better than the other, the question is, which would be better for your particular application... so... what is your application? games, multitasking, a/v editing, mp3s, internet, email? To put it in a nutshell, AMD is better suited for gaming, Intel is more for creation (editing photos, video, etc.)

Both chips will do everything mentioned, but one might do it faster/better

Personally, I'd get something in the GHz range. No sense using old processors that are barely at 2MHz! :p

Seriously, though, a P4 2GHz? That is such old technology! The RAM bandwidth for a P4 that old is the same as that of the Sempron, and the Sempron's are more modern and efficient per clock cycle. Even if the Sempron weren't more powerful by a long mile, I'd suggest it if only to avoid an aging Pentium 4 like that!

I only need the PC specially for internet, email and office. By the way is Dell way better than Compaq for Desktops?. Thanx for your prompt response.

Well, if you don't mind starting out with older technology and having limited upgrade options, then I suppose the P4 2GHz would be OK. Your needs are not intense by any means.

Dell vs Compaq? Ugh! Not much of a comparison there. That's like shopping for a car and comparing a rusted heap to a Nova with no wheels. :p At least, that's what it seems like to me. In short, if you get a cheapo PC from Dell or Compaq or HP or Gateway or whatever, you're just buying a throw-away PC. I've worked on such machines before and it was never pretty. But of course this is the opinion you'll get from a hardware snob like myself. ;) If you don't mind the limitations then it doesn't really matter who makes it - they're all the same IMO with only marginal differences.

Sorry I meant to say AMD 1.8Ghz Sempron vs. the Intel IV 2.0Ghz I need glasses. Thanx for your input but If I am not planning to become next Bil Gates and all I want to do is surf internet and write emails + office do I really need much higher technology, it is my oipinion but why not save the money for something else non computer related.....

I'd say a 1.8 Sempron 64 would be the best. What cores are the ones you are looking at? Are you trying to build? Are you looking at used pcs?

Win2K runs great on a 300MHz processor, 128MB or more of RAM, and a 4GB or larger hard drive. Heck at this point, why not go for a used computer? If you're really on a tight budget and you don't need anything more, just do that. You might have to buy a network card or modem, but that's small stuff.

Thanx guys 'll take your advice but I don't want to mess with used PC, basic new one will do. As you noticed I am not familiar with PC I can hardly post messages on this websites, I am just trying to get by in this competitive computer based society.
