I'll post the new log below. The problems I was experiencing was just VERY slow performance. I knew I probably had spyware/virus files deeper than ad aware et.al. would detect, so i ran the hijackthis program and then used pacman's portal to see which files (especially 04 files) were bad (had an 'X' next to them). I removed those and then I posted here.

I fixed the two files you recommended and did a search for any ?hkdsk.exe remaining ... none were found. The computer seems to be functioning better ... so hopefully that all worked. :)

My next problem is that I misplaced my Win XP Home cd that came with my computer and I'm trying to install a new wireless keyboard & mouse and I need it. The keyboard works (using it now) but the mouse needs a mouhid.sys file and I can't seem to download it on the internet; I need my Win XP cd. CRAP. So the mouse won't finish installing. Any advice?

Your log looks clean...

You need to go to this location in Windows Explorer and look for this file, it will not show in a search and it may not show unless you have Windows set to show all hidden files:

In Windows XP, on the taskbar, click Start > My Computer.
In Windows Me/2000/XP, on the Tools menu, click Folder Options.
On the View tab, uncheck Hide file extensions for known file types.
In Windows Me/2000/XP, uncheck Hide protected operating system files. Then, under the "Hidden files" folder, click Show hidden files and folders.
If you see a warning message, click Yes.
Click Apply.
Click OK.

I am not sure what to suggest for your other problem except to say that you need to find that WinXP disk or you are going to have more trouble later...

Assuming you are not having any more problems, you also desperately need to update WinXP to SP2... It is the most important security update they have ever released and it is dangerous to run without it... There is also a very important security update that you need that was released about a week ago...

This is a good time to set up protection against further

good firewall (a router firewall is not enough) and a

I changed the view tab so that all files would be shown and the search still didn't find any ?hkdsk.exe file. Does that mean it's really gone?

Also, I am updating to SP2 now ... I have been procrastinating, waiting for a day when I had time to do the deep dive to clean the computer first. Last time I tried w/out cleaning, SP2 was all messed up and wouldn't recognize some of my installed stuff.

Lastly, THANKS for the links on how to secure my system more. I will definitely read all of that and step it up. I appreciate the help.

i installed sp2, but it's disabling my yahoo toolbar (i live off that!) as well as mcafee virusscan. i went into the windows security center and into the firewall exceptions, but can't find the yahoo companion program to add it on. ???

no, i tried that. it was as if the "administrator" had to be the one to enable it, even though I AM the admin and was logged in as such, but it still wouldn't allow me to enable it. I finally figured it out though (after hours of searching) ... i had to go into the registry, had to figure out what the yahoo toolbar's CLSID was, find that in the registry and change the value to 2. That value allows it to be enabled by any user. That worked. I had to do that for McAfee VirusScan too. Both those programs were disabled. Very strange.
