This might sound like a silly question, but.... I assume that if a motherboard has on board sound, It can be overridden and your own sound card can be installed.
is this correct?

Yep, that's correct. Just go into your BIOS setup and there should be a setting to Disable on board sound.

No m8y it was a chaintec board, but i found a package instead with 128mb 133mhz ram, hald decent motherboard and duron 700 mhz chip for £172.00. so plumbed for that instead.
