I'm not sure if this is the right place to ask this, but between these two options, which should I purchase:

1) Norton Systemworks 2006/Personal Firewall 2006 Bundle, or
2) Norton Internet Security 2006

What is confusing to me is that there is some overlap between the two options. They both include Norton Antivirus and Personal Firewall. Option 1 includes Norton Utilities. But for Option 2, besides the Antivirus and Firewall, I'm not sure what more does NIS provide. I am not concerned about spam and kids do not use this computer, so user-appropriateness is also not a concern.

If my highest priority is to safeguard my computer against viruses, not have spyware, keep my computer clean from any unwanted installations of hidden programs in the background, and preventing malicious access to my computer, which above option should I buy?

Thanks!

You should purchase neither.

You can a free AV from Avast (http://www.avast.com/eng/download-avast-home.html) or AVG (http://free.grisoft.com/freeweb.php/doc/2/).

You can get a free firewall from Kerio (http://www.kerio.com/kpf_download.html) or Sygate (http://www.simtel.com/product.php%5Bid%5D53687%5Bsekid%5D0%5BSiteID%5Dsi mtel.net)

Sygate is no longer supported, but it is my favorite.

Classic is right, don't buy either. In fact don't buy any.

Norton is a bloated system hog, and why pay for something that you can get for free. ;)

Either of the choices Classic gave are excellent. I have both NIS and NSW sitting around somewhere, and can get up to five copies of another commercial security suite for free from my ISP, and I still use AVG and Kerio on all my machines.
