View Full Version : DEFRAGGING: ... ummm ... 14+ hours on System Mechanics 6 and still running??

Hi. New to this particular Forum/site. I know there are several other threads on the very popular/common question of Defragmentation, so bear with me.

WHAT:
I downloaded (30 day trial for now) System Mechanic 6 to help clean up my 36GB, 512RAM, Hewlett Packard PC running Windows XP. Have run all other "health, clutter, security" etc tests seemingly ok. But DEFRAGMENTATION is taking F-O-R-E-V-E-R. The "working" signs (and disk sounds) of movement are indicating that it is not freezing ... but it will go near 45-60 minutes sometimes without increasing a single percentile "done".

WHY:
My PC seemed to be slowing down over time (as is typical), groggy, long reboots, etc. You know the drill. The installed WN XP defrag option was even slower. I chose Iolo's SM6 S/W because it is advertised and recommended as FAST, but even this is taking a long time! I do like the software, and plan to keep it - but slowly growing frustrated.

MY ASK:
If I need to just let it run it's long long long (36 hours at this pace!?!?) course, then ok. But is this a sign of something more problematic? Or is it just a sign of a severly "non-defrag'd" HD needing a long overdue fix?

Thanks in advance!

Perhaps there is a problem and I always suggest running chkdsk or scandisk prior to any defragmentation so that one avoids defragging a corrupt file system.

A 36gig drive with 512RAM shouldnt take that long. There's nothing wrong with the WinXP defragmenter and defragging is also probably an over-rated necessity if your drive(s) is(are) formatted with the NTFS.
