AVG or AVAST for a free AV, yes it actually works also.
NOD32 for pay AV,
AVAST also has a good pay version.

PrntRhd's recommendations are just about the best. I would only add Kaspersky to consideration, should you have a reason to pay for AV.
Between the two free recommendations, both are very good, AVAST has more features including web based email potection.

I agree with the choices mentioned as well... I like NOD32 and plan to put it on my new system too... It is reasonably cheap, it is lean and it is effective....

AVG also has email protection.
AVG does not have a web-mail scanner, just a client scanner for POP3 & IMAP.
Although having two Antivirus packages running at the same time isnt recomended i have Avg free & Nod32 installed on my comp and they work great together.
And classic software is right that AVG dosent have a web-mail scanner but Nod32 does.
I havnt had 1 virus in the past 3 months since i started using NOD32.

I highly recommend Avast. It's free and offers real time scanning for web, chat, p2p, and more.
Something else to consider is the fact that Avast recognized and immunized the threat of the recent WMF exploit, while AVG did not.
