blocked access attempt

For example, I have Zone Alarm and it reports 11000 blocked attempts and it says that 50 of those were "high-rated". I have run this computer before without Zone Alarm and usually nothing adverse seemed to happen.
What does it really mean when a software firewall blocks an access attempt?

This is very likely to be the "heartbeat" from your ISP. Is your ISP's DNS server listed in your trusted zone? Are you also behind a hardware NAT router? The configuration section of the Zonelabs forums offers some great info about this subject.
