I am trying to find out about the wide variation of download speeds; I know alot of it is based on the host server, time of day, etc. Dload accelerators seem to help but isnt there some tweaks that would do the same thing without using a possibly invasive or adware program? My system is pretty fast; pent 4 1024 MB avg dload speed 80 kbs and has been as high as 180 kbs. IE dloads are consistently lower, rarely going over 50 kbs while p2p are much higher. I have been on with a p2p dloading @ 70 kbs, used IE at the same time to dload a 58MB program @ 32 kbs wich is about 25 min of dload time. when I stopped the p2p I expected the IE dload to jump up in speed but it stayed the same throughout- Is this just a server issue or can I manually tweak to increase performance/speed with IE? Thanks for any replies....BB

Hi doubleb, I really can't answer alot, but I will tell you that any connection is only going to be as fast as your phone lines. You can tweak your computer to your hearts content but you will never go any faster than your line will handle. The so called "accelerators" only change settings on your computer they have nothing to do with the phone line. I mean really, think about it. :) Just another way for ISPs to rip off the consumer in my book and that's just my opinion mind you.

It is possible to tweak the RWIN value in the ethernet adapter to maximize TCP/IP packet rates, but you need to explain your broadband connection a bit further.
The first thing to check is the average lag time (ping times to several sites) and the stated download speed you are signed up for with your ISP.

A different method is to try this site, but I take no responsibility if your connection fails after a tweak:
http://www.speedguide.net/analyzer.php?DATA_OFFSET=40&TCP_Options_string=020405b401010402&IP_MTU_DISCOVER=1&WIN=65535&RWIN=65535&MSS=1460&SCALE=0&TTL=114&TSOPT=0&SACK_PERM=1&IP_TOS=32&IP=71.198.241.192&timestamp=1135913113
I do have sites that can restore defaults if you run into problems.

Thanks for the replies.........My connection is Clearwire- a broadband wireless service-no phone line- -set up as a LAN (but no other pcs are on my connection) from nearby tower, and also I have tried speedguide, that where I got some of my clocked speed...as far as the stated speed from isp they claim 10 Mbps- not happenin but the potential is there ( I think) I am kinda intrigued with the RWIN adapter tweak, especially for IE-- any more details on that? Thanks again, BB

I am located in Jacksonville, and I also am using Clearwire. Nowhere have I ever seen anything even close to 10mbps claimed by them. The most expensive package offered only claims 1.5mbps down. I typically get 4 bars at my location, and see usually see upwards of 130KB/s. That works out to around 1mbps consistently.

I've used most of the tweaks that I was able to find. There wasn't a profound difference, mainly this seems to be due to the very high latency.

Claimed speeds: http://www.clearwire.com/store/service_plans.php

With respect to your experience concerning p2p. It is very likely that you're maxing out the source machine's upload speed, and your numbers don't necessarily reflect anything that tweaking will alleviate.

Yeah I know its a tricky and probrably I can't maximize my speed- I'll just be happy with what I have- by the way my Clearwire just recently jumped to 5 lights consistantly ( I have the premium package) and really I have no reason to complain- just wondering bout IE's slow rate- but am always looking for more......Thanks everyone for the input.
