I have Gateway desktop running windows xp home and IBM Thinkpad laptop with windows XP Pro. my gateway's modem is out and I waas wondering if there is a way that I can hook laptop to gateway to access internet to download driver updaates to gateway. Is there hardware I need or is there a way I can just plug them into each other and use modem from laptop to get online with gateway? any help would be appreciated. Thanks!!

If you can network them, you can set up Internet Connection Sharing using the Network Setup Wizard in the Control Panel. You'll need to run the wizard on the Thinkpad first, setting it up to share a connection (click Next twice, then it's the first option). Then run the wizard on your Gateway, this time choosing the second option. Once the wizard is finished, connect to the Internet via the Thinkpad, and you should be able to get your updates on the Gateway.

I done the set up on both computers the Thinkpad first. The gateway still wont connect to the internet it is finding the laptop as a modem but just wont connect with it, can only get it to set up to where it dials and if i am alaready online on Thinkpad it isnt going to be able to dial up, but if I am not then it wont either it says there is something wrong with modem on the remote computer. Also if I am online with Thinkpad when i run network setup on Gateway I get a Spool app error. It is sending the error report but IE wont open and it says that I am not connected.

but just wont connect with it
You have to make the connection first with the laptop and after it is happily on line you then share that connection (using ICS) from the desktop where the internet connection should be via a LAN and not via a modem. There is third party software (such as Twiga's RDU (http://www.twiga.ltd.uk/rdu.asp) which I really like because it monitors the connection both ways) which will allow you to instruct the other computer to dial-up but this isnt done natively as far as I am aware.
The simplest workaround might well be to use a USB pendrive or a usb-to-usb file sharing cable as long as both computers have USB support. Then transfer the downloads that way.
