Dear all!

I'll try to be brief, so I'll get right to it: I keep getting the above warning when plugging in an external HDD enclosure ViPower VP-2528SA2. I've tried 4 different PCs all having USB 2.0 ports, Enhanced Controller listed in the Devmgmt. and running XP pro/home with SP1a or SP2. The problem is that the drive operates at extremely low (USB 1.1) speeds. It took roughly 2 mins to copy a 102MB file, using a little math it makes the speed of below 12 Mbps... My PC is Dell Inspiron 1100, 2 high-speed USB ports, XP Pro with SP1a, Intel chipset drivers loaded; (ICH4 chipset by intel) also I have a PCMCIA D-link USB 2.0 twin port card (NEC Enhanced USB controller). The Hard disk used is a Hitachi DK23CA-20 (20 Gig), Ultra DMA (ata-5, up to 100Mbps), with 2048K cache buffer. The enclosure uses Genesis USB high-speed controller.

So, all the 4 systems used to test my ext. drive do recognize the device as being USB 2.0, but tell me to plug it into a different Hi-speed port - absurd! The ViPower tech support proved to be useless, maintaining that I simply don't have a high-speed controller (well, why the hell do other devices work on the same ports at 480Mbps??? Magic?). Then I took the enclosure to the store (almost a year after i'd purchased it). They pulled another trick on me: plugged the thing into a USB 2.0 self powered hub and proved to me that the message does not appear, therefore the device is functioning properly... Dah, I know it works, but it's slow as hell, besides, when using an external hub (according to MS - the pop-up doesn't come up as it's bridged through an existing hi-speed device, which is the HUB).

Please help me resolve this issue, I can always buy another enclosure, but at this point (a year later) I am kean to find a solution to this problem!

Go to the following link, and do the steps under 'How To Upgrade....':
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;329632

If no luck, then it may be time for a different HD enclosure.

Thanks! I've looked at the link several times and I do have the latest versions of the drivers, even tried Intel ones (they're slightly newer). I also have a win2k laptop with SP4 - same thing, slooooow transfer rate.

I guess u were right, - time for a different enclosure. Bottom line: stay away from Genesys GL811E chip and ViPower products!

Cheers
