View Full Version : XP "Save As" Glitch?

If I have a document open in Microsoft Office Word 2003, and I put my jump drive/flash drive into one of the USB ports and then select "Save As," the computer won't register the drive. I have to click "cancel," and then do "Save As" a second time for the jump drive to appear, regardless of how much time lapses before I attempt the first "Save As" and what brand of jump drive I use. Is this a glitch in the program, or is it fixable? (It sure is irritating...)

I would appreciate any input, and thank you for your time.

Hello DreamAside

When you first boot up in XP plug in your flash drive before you open any applications. You should be able to hear a sound indicating that a usb device has been plugged in. What message do you get in the right hand bottom corner of your task bar?

When you go into "My Computer" does the drive show there?

I haven't heard of a glith with XP and flash drives. We use them here at the office and I've used them many times before on different XP Home and Pro systems...never had a problem.

Give some more details as to what happens when you first plug in the drive and either myself or one of the gods here will certainly be able to give you a hand.

If you are indeed just connecting the drive, and immediatly hitting Save As... then it is likely that you have not yet given the computer a chance to recognize the device yet.

Also as mentioned try connecting it, and making sure that it is recognized before opening Word and see if it makes a difference. Could just be that Word is using the list of available devices from when it is opened, and hitting cancel makes it refresh.

The glitch occurs even if I plug in the devices and then wait for thirty-some minutes before attempting to save. Two other people have contacted me saying they are experiencing the same problem, so it's not stupidity on my part creating the problem (well, I suppose it's still possible...).

When I plug in the flash drive, a little button appears in the lower right hand corner that says "safely remove hardware" when I roll my mouse over it.
