Upon start-up Microsoft Antispyware Beta is warning me of a BHO trojan. Spybot S&D and McAfee do not pick it up. The item MAB is referring to is: (this is the line item from my HijackThis scan, entire scan is below)

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {e0103cd4-d1ce-411a-b75b-4fec072867f4} - (no file)

I tried following the steps BudFred recommended in the following post, but I don't appear to have the SpyAxe items, the BHO reappears every time I reboot.

Any ideas,
Thanks,
Bill

Welcome to http://www.pcguide.com/ubb/pcgubb.gif forums....

You may want to print out or make a copy of these instructions before starting, because you will not be able to connect to the internet during most of this fix.

1) Run Spybot-S&D
2) Go to the Mode menu and make sure "Advanced Mode" is selected
3) On the left hand side, choose Tools -> Resident
4) Uncheck "Resident TeaTimer" and OK any prompts
5) Restart your computer.

Download smitRem.exe (http://noahdfear.geekstogo.com/click%20counter/click.php?id=1) and save the file to your desktop.
Double click on the file to extract it to it's own folder on the desktop.

Please download, install, and update the free version of Ewido Security Suite (http://www.ewido.net/en/download/):

When installing, under "Additional Options" uncheck "Install background guard" and "Install scan via context menu".
When you run Ewido for the first time, you will get a warning "Database could not be found!". Click OK. We will fix this in a moment.
From the main Ewido screen, click on update in the left menu, then click the Start update button.
After the update finishes, the status bar at the bottom will display "Update successful"
Exit Ewido. DO NOT run a scan yet.

If you do not already have Ad-Aware SE 1.06 installed, follow these download and setup instructions. Also check for updates:
Ad-Aware SE Setup (http://rstones12.geekstogo.com/adawareSE_setup.htm)
Again, do NOT run a scan yet.

Next, please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following:
Restart your computer
Just before Windows starts to load, press F8.
Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.

Open the smitRem folder, then double click the RunThis.bat file to start the tool. Follow the prompts on screen. Your desktop and icons will disappear and then reappear again --- this is normal.
Wait for the tool to complete and Disk Cleanup to finish --- this may take a while; please be patient.

Next, run Ad-aware and perform a full scan. Remove everything found.

Now open Ewido Security Suite
Click on Scanner
Click on Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
Select "Perform action on all infections"
When the scan is finished, click the Save report button at the bottom of the screen.
Save the report to your desktop
Close Ewido

Next go to Start -> Control Panel, click Display -> Desktop -> Customize Desktop -> Web -> Uncheck "Security Info" if present.

Restart your computer in normal mode.

Run the Panda online virus scan at http://www.pandasoftware.com/products/activescan.htm

- Once you are on the Panda site click the Scan your PC button
- A new window will open...click the Check Now button
- Enter your Country
- Enter your State/Province
- Enter your e-mail address and click send
- Select either Home User or Company
- Click the big Scan Now button
- If it wants to install an ActiveX component allow it
- It will start downloading the files it requires for the scan (Note: It may take a couple of minutes)
- When download is complete, click on Local Disks to start the scan
- When the scan completes, if anything malicious is detected, click the See Report button, then Save Report and save it to a convenient location.

Ok, I did everything, rebooted and the registry key was cleaned up. I then rechecked the "resident tea timer" on Spybot S&D and the key was recreated and I got the warning from Microsoft Antispyware. I deselected the tea timer again and everything was ok and so on.

So this registry key is created when Spybot has the tea timer enabled and Microsoft Antispyware reads it as a trojan:

BHO: (no name) - {e0103cd4-d1ce-411a-b75b-4fec072867f4} - (no file)

Are they incompatable? Do I have a problem if I just ignore the warning? Any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks, Bill

You should not run two resident programs that do essentially the same thing... They can conflict with each other... Also, they can each restore fixes that you have run and need to be disabled prior to the fixes... Here are instructions for disabling TeaTimer and MSAS...

Turn off TeaTimer to remove those entries. Open Spybot S&D in advanced mode, click Tools > Resident, and remove the check from "Resident Tea-Timer". Reboot after unchecking the entry.

Before starting any cleaning steps, please disable the Microsoft Anti-Spyware real-time protection:

Right-click on the Microsoft Anti-Spyware tray icon by your clock (it's the one with the red and yellow bulls-eye).
Click on "Security Agents Status".
Click on "Disable real-time protection".

Next, open Microsoft Anti-Spyware.

Click on the Options menu, then Settings.
Select "Real Time Protection" from the left column.
Uncheck "Enable (MSAS) Security Agents" and "Enable real-time spyware threat protection".
Click the Save button.

Finally, Right-click on the MSAS tray icon, select "Shutdown Microsoft Antispyware", and click "Yes" in the dialog that comes up.

You can reenable it once your system is clean.

Then open and HJT scan and put checks by these if they are still there:

R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = http://www.iwon.com/
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {e0103cd4-d1ce-411a-b75b-4fec072867f4} - (no file)
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [AdwareAlert] C:\Program Files\AdwareAlert\adwarealert.Exe -boot

Close all open windows except HJT and press Fix checked...

Reboot and post a fresh HJT log... It would be a good idea to also post the SmitRem log...

OK,

I disabled tea timer in Spybot, shutdown MSAS, and ran a HJT. I cleaned up the items that were there and rebooted.

MSAS came back up on reboot. Do I now go in and re-enable Security Agents and real-time protection?

I assume I no longer run Spybot in real time.

Below is a fresh HJT log and the SmitRem log. By the way I made yahoo my IE start page.

Thanks for your help in this, Bill

Your logs look clean... How are things running??

Go ahead and make sure that all of the MSAS options are running and leave TeaTimer turned off... MSAS is so aggressive in the way it works, I would actually choose TeaTimer over it, but you would have to completely uninstall MSAS to do that... Spybot and TeaTimer tend to play better with others...
