Alright, so I had a flawless network going for a year. One PC connected, one wireless PC and two wireless laptops. It was all fine. I have a Netgear MR814v2 "B" router. Lately I have been having so much trouble its almost unusable. I have reset my router/cable modem, repaired connections, the whole works. My file sharing amongst my PCs is still fine, and fast. It's just the internet. I have norton internet security, but it seems that even if I disable that, it still goes slow. When I check the data, there are no packets coming in regularly. When I goto a webpage, the staus bar will say loading for like 60 seconds, then the page pops up. Same thing happens when I click on another link within that page.

The only thing I've done lately was build a new computer running norton internet security and xp pro... but how would this effect the other computers?

There are a lot of issues that could be involved here. Since we are talking about the internet connection only lets start with your ISP. Have you called them to report the problem? I have had similiar issues on a couple of occassions to just find that they were doing some work, and thus left me with limited bandwidth.

Also, what kind of internet connection are you on?

Have you tried disconnecting the modem from the power, and letting it sit for a few hours? This forces it to grab a new IP address when it comes back up. Sometimes there might just be a problem with the particular IP address you have been holding.

yes i've called the isp a few times (adelphia cable line), they said the network was doing fine. it really seems to be some sort of ip problem, but i dont know why its doing this all of a sudden. sometimes when i try to repair the connection it gets stuck up. grrrr. its one of those problems you cant troubleshoot without being there at my desk. i guess ill have to figure it out...

has anyone seen a router go "bad" and screw things up half the time?

Have you tried unplugging the modem for a few hours as I suggested? I have had this same type of problem with my cable service from time to time. Usually just leaving it unplugged for some time, and forcing it to get a new IP address will help. It could be for whatever reason that IP address is corrupted, or didn't renew its lease properly, or the ISP decided to flag it for whatever reason.

yeah ive physically reset the modem, and router, reinstalled it all, bypassed the router to my computer, released/renewed ips. im imaging my new pc has SOMETHING to do with it because this only happened since the new pc was installed.

Remove the new PC from the network - unplug it and how is the speed then?

DITTO

When something is working(Your Network) and you add something new (YOUR NEW PC)and it stops working it's usually the thing you add (YOUR NEW PC).

If you have XP Professional or Windows 2000, you can look in the Dr. Watson log and see if there are any errors. With such limited information and being far away, it appears you either have :

1) A virus/spyware program on your new PC that is spitting out a huge amount of network traffic

2) A Bad NIC.

3) A bad Ethernet cable connecting the PC to the network

4) A bad port on the router.
