....do a ctrl-alt-del and get to task manager. If so check if there is a process "not responding" and post it here. I have had a similar problem caused by spyware.

Completely disabling the paging file is a bad idea. From TheElderGeek (http://www.theeldergeek.com/locating_the_page_file.htm)
Finally, the temptation is always great when you have a RAM packed machine to totally eliminate the page file. Don't do it. By design, some components in Windows XP require the presence of a page file, even if they never use it for its intended purpose. You'll likely receive out of memory type errors if you eliminate all page files. Feel free to set the page file to the required minimum (2MB) if you have sufficient RAM, secure in the knowledge that XP won't access the page file unless it's absolutely needed, but again - don't eliminate it totally.

Im having trouble shutting down WINXPAre you receiving any error messages? Would you be a bit more descriptive regarding what exactly is happening when you attempt to shut down?

This has recently started happening to me as well, and it's terribly annoying. My computer runs fine while it's up and going, but when I try to logoff or shutdown it just hangs for terribly long periods of time. It eventually will shut down, but it just hangs for around 5 minutes before it finally does. There are no error messages, there is no significant disk activity, and none of the services or processes reports as Not Responding. I've tried disconnecting the network connection and removing USB devices before attempting shutdown, but it has no impact. I've also defragmented and executed a check disk on the machine. Unfortunately I have no answers, but you're not the only one with this problem, xdream16.
*edit*
Regarding ski's post, the MS help article didn't resolve this for me. My computer is ACPI rather than APM, so I don't even have the tab they mention.

.....definitly a spyware problem. All the symptons are there. What could be the main reason your system is slow is that it is trying to communicate with another sever at the same time it wants to open a page for you. This is fine when it is only one or two sites. Once it starts to try for multiple sites your system basically shuts down. You also could have several programs running at start up that cause similar problems.
You will need to run Hijackthis and post the results here in this forum.
People much better than me will take over and help you!

Thanks for the suggestions, biggmc01. While there is no way that I can say it isn't spyware with absolute certainty, I am pretty confident about that. I'm connected through a Linksys hardware firewall, with ZoneAlarm software firewall, running through Avast Web Shield AV scanner, using Firefox, on a fully updated XP Pro install. I perform pretty frequent Spybot, AdAware, HJT, and Avast AV scans. I am extremely hesitant to install any software, and I am so careful (noided?) that I don't even allow Java to run in my browser. ZA informs me of any attempts to connect to the Internet, I often run the TCPView analyzer from sysinternals.com, and this problem still happens when there is no network connection.
Again, you may be right, but I feel pretty secure that this is related to something else. Is there any possibility that this could be symptomatic of a pending hard drive failure? This WDC has served me very well for 5 or 6 years, so even if it wouldn't cause this, I think she's about had it.

Just my thoughts, but it couldn't hurt to run a HiJack test and ask Budfred and/or Classic take a look at it.
If there was something wrong with that software it wouldn't be recommended on this site, and not be disputed.

You are quite obviously correct, beerbelly. My knee jerk response was more motivated by trying to convince myself it's not spyware, rather than trying to sound like I don't need anyone's help. My apologies for that. Part of me thinks this should possibly get it's own thread. If that's the case, I'll make sure not to do this again, and hopefully a mod would also be kind enough to move my post. HJT log follows...

Hmm I guess it could be spywear but I doubt. My network is also connected through a firewall. Anyways this problem started happening after I reinstalled WINXP.

Could of course be spyware junk, but with a clean installation it more than likely has to do with software/drivers not playing nice together.
ski's suggestion, I believe, has to do with attempting to isolate bogus software by isolating startup programs.
One thing you might want to have a look at is Black Vipers XP tweaks. I found a pretty close copy of it here:
http://www.dead-eye.net/WinXP%20Services.htm
There's lots of stuff in the background that you don't need running that could contribute to slow shutdowns and starts.

Hmmm...I'd run the harddrive diagnostics. These can be downloaded from the manufacturer's website. Maybe, maybe not...but I'd eliminate the variable...

I noticed you said the problems occured after you re-installed XP. The recycle bin problem can be fixed by getting the service pack.
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=297760 will show you all about it.
