I'm new to XP since I have used W2K up until a few days ago. I don't understand why XP is reporting in Windows Explorer that my folders are read only? And I'm signed on as administrator, but can't seem to remove that attribute.
Help.
Thanks.

Look under folder properties and make sure that "Read only" isn't checked. What files are you trying to access?

Read Only is checked, but I can't get it to stay un-checked when I clear the check box. When I take a look at the folder again, it's still read only, as if an XP setting is over-riding what I'm attempting to change.
I was working on some MS Word files with an admin logon. Then I decided that I should be working on them under a different limited logon. So now when I try to save them from the limited logon, I get a message in Word saying they are read only. Does that mean that I can now only access them from the admin logon?
Thanks.

Where are the files saved? Try using "Save as" instead, and overwrite the existing file.
NICE rig, by the way!

Thanks. Just started using it this weekend. Took me a long time to build. Only bought one or two parts every so often. I think I enjoyed picking out the parts more than anything else.
The doc files are in a folder all their own.

Save as... didn't work. Still says file is 0read-only.

Which version of WindowsXP? It sounds as if your limited user account needs to be given read permissions. Alternatively, depending on the version, put the folder into the shared documents folder, while logged on as admin.

XP Pro. What it seems like is happening is that if an application is run from the administrator logon (either deliberately or accidently), then log off and log on under the limited user, that application won't run or at least looses some of it's functionality.
I'm sure it's just my inexperience with XP. Where do I check to see if the limited user has read permissions?
Thanks guys.

First you need to enable the security tab by disabling "Simple File Sharing". My Computer -- Tools -- Folder Options -- View Menu. Then RClick on the folder or file and choose first Properties and then the Security Tab. From there you can see and change the various permissions (assuming you have Admin permissions at that time).
