Dear all,

I have an Athlon 2200 @1.8GHz which has served me right since for two years now. Being still satified with it I need a second desktop for my 8yrs young boy.
There are now some "cheap" AMDs like the Sempron 3000+. Now the thing is that I could buy a nice looking box and put my old pc inside that box and make his present out of it. I would have the new Sempron with a new mother board etc.
But before I decide that I would like to know if I really would gain any speed with this sempron when compared with my system at the mo.

Can anyone please shed some light on this?

Many thanks

Carlos

fist off, I'm guessing that that would be an Athlon XP. XPs are old technology. The Semprons- though "budget" CPUs, are current technology- and make a great CPU for the normal user. You would notice a nice litttle bost with a 3000+ Sempron over a 2200 XP.

If you're talking about a Socket A Sempron 3000+, the performance difference would be slight. You'd certainly notice it when gaming or doing anything intensive on the system. However, the latest Semprons use Socket 754 and AMD's new K8 microarchitecture. Now we're talking about an entirely new platform, not just a boost in the CPU itself. The Socket 754 platform as a whole is a lot better than the best that Socket A can offer. It would indeed be worth it to upgrade to a Socket 754 Sempron system.

hi there guys,
thank you very much for your input. It really helped me deciding. That's what I'm going to do then. Yes, it a Sempron on a 754 socket.
