I have a Compaq Presario that is a couple years old and a couple of weeks ago the power supply started to smoke so I replaced it with another. Now when it is turned on the pc seems to work but the but nothing comes up on the moniter and the pc has a yellow light instead of a green light that shows up. (no inital warranty) PLEASE HELP!

Aloha boyleal and welcome to http://www.pcguide.com/ubb/pcgubb.gif

When you say the pc has a yellow light instead of a green light that shows up.
Are you getting any beep codes during POST?
I assume you mean the power indicator light on the monitor. If that is correct, try powering down the whole system, unplugging the monitor cable from tower and unplug power cord to monitor. Leave this for 15 minutes or so, plug it all back together and try power up. I had a similar problem not too long ago where I forgot to power down the monitor before unplugging it from the vid card. Needless to say I thought I fried the whole system. After a half hour of complete disconnection from power, I plugged it all back together and all was well.
I would also recommend unplugging and re-seating all connections to the mobo (vid card, RAM, IDE connectors, etc...).

If you are in fact talking about a different colored light on the tower itself, and the above does not help, let us know and we can go from there.

Hello boyleal.

Are you aware that leal means loyal in the old Scots language? :)

hello bassman, no i did not no leal + loyal but that is a cool little fact to remember. I tried what you said but it did not work. i think it is because it is not the same power supply as the original one. The machine fan turns on and the pc acts like it is booting, but there is no display on the moniter. there are no beeb codes during post either.

My icons look normal. :)

Sylvander’s Diagnostic Flowcharts
Download a copy of my diagnostic flowcharts from here
www.erniek.eclipse.co.uk/downloads/sylvanderdiags.zip
and print them to leaf through.
Begin on the STARTUP chart.

You might Startup with all RAM removed, then if you get warning beeps you know that the POST is running; if you get no beeps then it probably isn't running.

Icons have nothing to do with computer knowledge...only computer zeal! They accumulate due to the total number of posts, each added at some mysterious preset number...

Did the old PSU have any connectors that the new one does not? Many old Compaq's that I've seen have an extra proprietary connector that goes from the PSU to the mobo. Usually this connects to an area near the CPU.

nope the new one has same number of connectors.

P.S. thanks for the flowcharts bassman. I will work on it.
