Is there any danger in placing a Celeron 600Mhz chip in a motherboard which only supports up to 533Mhz?

I've done it, and no fires broke out that I couldn't extinguish http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/wink.gif .

But, seriously: if you know the board only supports up to a 533MHz Celeron, you're out of luck. It's the difference between being a PPGA and a FPGA ("flip") chip: the flip chip has a lower voltage core and a slightly different "pin out". Intel made 533MHz Celerons in both versions, but a 600MHz is definitely of the FPGA "Coppermine 128" variety.

I didn't know all this when I bought a boxed 600MHz Celeron. It works great in a Compaq motherboard that originally came with a 500MHz (I was lucky). No dice when I tried it in a 366i Emachine; the power supply would start to come on, and then immediately shut down.

I just found a product I didn't know existed: a PPGA to FC-PGA socket370 converter. PowerLeap Neo S370 (http://www.powerleap.com/Neo-S370/)
