Well, I'm getting a new computer, and I am kinda short on cash, but I'm not going to get any extras like DVD drives or CD-RW's. As the primary purpose of this new machine will be as a games platform, unfrotunately a budget games platform, if there is such a thing. But the question is, do you people think a Geforce 2 MX would castrate a 1 GHz Athlon? I understand it isn't the best card around, and eventually I plan on upgrading to a Geforce 2 GTS or Ultra(late fall/winter-Northern hemisphere http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/redface.gif)when they're probably cheaper. But do you guys think a Geforce 2 MX would severely limit a 1GHz Athlon's power? Should I just bite my lip and get a Geforce 2 GTS instead? Also, I plan to use it for racing sims, if it makes a difference...

I would never go for the "MX" and "SDR" version of a video card because the DDR versions should be coming down in price very soon. Some of the next gen video cards are due out this spring. For instance the 32MB DDR Radeon was about $230 3-4 months ago. Now they can be had for about $150 sometimes cheaper. The reason is because the Radeon 2 is coming out in the spring.

Also Why buy a 1GHz chip and stick a MX card on it (Ohhhh.. the humility)
Live a little, go for the gold, ( Can I think of any more clichés) and get the best video card you can afford.

Well, like I said, it's only temporary, and after being stuck with 266 MHz for the past 4 years, I'm somewhat processor paranoid. It's much easier to upgrade a video card than a processor. And btw, a DDR video card, DDR is referring ot the chip's onboard RAM right? You don't need to have DDR system RAM to use one of those cards do you?

Your right DDR is refering to the card's memory. You don't need DDR main memory or a DDR MB to use them.

If you are a serious gamer, why save that little money on a MX and then get a GTS when the price drop? I just bought a Nvidia GeForce2 GTS for the price of a MX http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/biggrin.gif Please don't ask where I got that. Thanks !

ha..a GTS for the price of an MX eh? Hmmm...But regardless, my gameplan has changed a bit.I've changed my mind, I'm going to get a Duron 750 paired with an ATI Radeon 32 MB DDR. The Durons are practically a steal, that 750 is like $60 or so. And plus the SuperOrb fan I'm getting is only $20 more...
