Hi,,, im new to this forum, but i have an upgrade question. I currently own a pentium 2 450 slot 1 on a soyo mobo. From what I have gathered the mobo is not to bad. It can handle up to 1gb of ram. I have clocked the fsb to 100mhz, and im running 320mgs of ram, soundblaster live x-gamer and a voodoo 3500 16meg. I have read that you can put p3 processor in the slot 1. Is this true? I read somewhere that a p2450 mmx benchmarked higher than a p3 500 or 600. If so, would upgrading be not worth my time.
I use this system primarily for gaming. I plan on adding another 128mgs or ram for faster play. Money is not a issue, but Im not going to buy another computer if this one can still hang a bit.

Why not upgrade to a Pentium 4 chip and change the motherboard to match? I a not sure which socket it uses, but get a board to suit it.
I am curious, does your graphics match that of ,say, a playstation? I know it must really be great!!

Yep, I looked up CPU's for my sister yesterday, she's getting a Slot 1 board, and I found Slot 1 P-III 750 and others for it. P-III is also made in Socket 370 from what I saw when looking up the one she wanted to get, it was socket 370 I think, that's what made me start looking closer. It wasn't listed as socket 370, just the letters that accompany socket 370 chips, FCPGA...

Thanks for replying, I would like to keep the mobo and look for a possible processor swap out. Like I was saying, Would it be worth doing that. You can get a slot 1 pentium 3 to fit. But whats the biggest p3 processor I can install. I heard the p4 have problems. Changing out the mobo would not be my expertice, nor which one to buy.
What were you saying about the graphics. I do plan on upgrading to a Radeon ddr.

Thanks for repling Paleo Pete. So your saying that I can at least fit a p3 750 and maybe higher. Question, lets say I go that route, will there be any problems swapping out the p2450 for a p3750 slot one. A bigger question, most likely the p3 will require more voltage than the p2. And will I be able to keep the 100mhz fsb or will I need to go back to 66mhz.
This is the kind of computer knowledge i lack on, so I dont wanna make a mistake. Thanks very much for the help.

They make slot 1 P3s up to, I'm pretty sure, 800mhz...they run at 100mhz fsb so you're fine there...the only problem is finding out if the mobo can support a chip that fast...I had a P2 slot 1 board and I was out of luck...that was the fastest chip speed it would allow...
Another thing to look at would be a "slocket" card which is a card that accepts a socket 370 chip and plugs into a slot 1 mobo...if your board can do a 133 fsb, then you'd be better off buying the fastest p3 the board will accept with the 133mhz fsb...
If the board won't do a 133 setting, you could also do a slocket with a celeron...granted you'd have to go back to 66 mhz fsb...
The main thing you HAVE to find out is what the max cpu speed accepted by the board is...check soyo's website and look for a manual for the board...you may need a bios upgrade to go to the higher speeds, although some P2 board voltage regulators are not compatible with the P3 above 600mhz...
Anothet company, evertech.com has premade upgrades up to 800mhz, something to look at...
