Please post in one thread for one problem. I merged both threads here.

Try going to Control Panel>Internet Options>Connections>Change to "Always Dial My Default Connection" or "Dial Whenever a Network Connection is Not Present", and Apply. Basically your modem may have been asked to not dial for the school network connection.

The reason I wanted you to check the settings in Internet Options is that Dell probably already had your modem installed, working, and available, but if the setting got changed it will never try to dial via the modem.

We read all the posts, just remember this is a bulletin board, not a chatroom.

my 3 com 10/100 lan+56 k modem p.c. card is on a pci slot 4 and it automatically is set up on internet connections as broadband connection which is cool butim using dial up at the current moment and its not set up at all. when i go to make a new connection they ask only about modems on com 1. well i dont have just a plain modem and it certaintly is not on com 1 please tell me how to set up my p.c. card as a dial up modem so i can go online

There are some confusing issues here. You say you have a pc card that is a combined LAN and 56k modem, and is set up on broadband. I am not aware of any 56k modem that allows connection to broadband. You should have a DSL modem for that type of connection. 56k modems are restricted to dial-up.

I think the model of card you quote is discontinued, but similar cards exist. Can you describe how you connect the various wires from the card, ie is there a cable from the phone box on the wall to the phone input socket on the card? This should not be the LAN socket which looks similar but is definitely not the same.

The fact you are using pci slot 4 does not alter the comms port it uses. There is no direct reltionship between them. COM1 is a logical port that Windows will allocate to a specific device. In this case I would guess COM1 woud relate to your PCI card.

I would plug the card in, switch the laptop on, and try running the Internet connection wizard. I am sure if you select COM1 the computer will route the signal through the modem.

Let us know how you get on.

http://support.3com.com/infodeli/tools/nic/3c3fem656c/ug/artfiles/alconmod.gif

and this is the info for it as reposrted by device manager
FEM656C- 3com global 10-100+56k Cardbus P.C. Card (fast Ethernet)
device type: network adapter
lovation: PCI Bus 4 ; device 0; function 0
its set to enable and says its working properly and its removable so its listed under the littl green arrow at the taskbar under remove hardware. ITS ALSO SET UP AS MY BROADBAND CONNECTION UNDER INTERNET CONNECTIONS it doesnt let me set it up as my dial up modem though. and yes i do know the difference between the jacks i dont know wat the problem is please help

also internet connection and all other automatic network settings and help all report that there is no modem detected. i kno the difference between the LAN slot and the 56k slot. the Lan slot worked in letting me use high speed internet at school with no problem at all. thats great but even though everything is plugged in correctly it still doesnt let me sign on using dial up

Something you can try.
Ok, first thing you have to do is find out the local AOL phone # (you are using AOL right?). A phone call to them should get you this.
Then go into your control panel and select internet options.
Select the connections tab. You will see a box about 1/4 of the way down labeled dial-up and vpn settings. Next to it you will see an "add" box. Select it. Select dial up to private network. Enter the phone #. After that on the internet options screen select "dial whenever a network connection isn't present". It should dial out whenever a lan isn't present, and not effect those settings.

Call 1-800-827-6364. It will put you in touch with AOL customer service.

well should i use that number cuz i have several local numbers that i normally would use for the modem to dial up

If you have the number to the AOL server, by all means use that. Test it first, by calling it on the phone and see if a compuer answers. Also, it's a good idea to call the operator and verify that it is a local #.

In Device Manager, does anything show up under modems? That is the first place to start. If there are no modems listed, then it will not try to connect to them. If it does list a modem, you will have to set up an alternate location in the AOL software.

no thats the thing nothing is listed under modems but i kno the p.c. card works its just how to i get the 56 k modem aspect of it to register and work the lan aspect of it is much more plug and play and automatically set itself up under internet connections but the 56 k part of it its almost as if it doesnt exist

i actually am looking at it rigt now and its maing me feel real frustarted how could it be so difficult

knicks

there isnt even a section for modems on device manager. there is network adapter where the p.c. card thatis the lan and 56 k modem in general is, and then it goes to A PCI SIMPLE COMMUNICATIONS CONTROLLER WHICH I DONT KNO WAT THIS IS, THEN com 1 and such where their is no modem,. this is my hard drive from my inspiron laptop but its runnign much better on this dell lattitude laptop besides this dial up issue. and then to make a connection under internet settings it doesnt let me make a dial up modem setting using this p.c card. it only has com 1 and there isnt any modem attached there

classicsoftware

and then it goes to A PCI SIMPLE COMMUNICATIONS CONTROLLER WHICH I DONT KNO WAT THIS IS,

And therein lies the problem.....

You need to install the modem drivers for this device...... That PCI simple communications controller is your modem....

Do a system restore point so you can go back if the driver does not work and then try the 2k driver.
