Hello all,
I didn't use my PC for about 1 year & half. It's a brand new PC it's an HP Pavillion 500N. I tried to hook it up but there was no beep, fan was kinda working & the monitor green light turns orange ( obvious since the PCU is not working) i kept trying plugging & unplugging then i heard like an engine sound it was loud, so i thought may be it's starting up but nothing. i opened it up made sure all the motherboard cards aren't loose or anything and still not working!it's Dead! Even the fan is not working! so i'm assuming may be it's the power supply that needs to be replaced or something!! anybody who experienced the same problem, please lemme know how to fix this problem, it's driving me nuts guys & i don't know much about computers as a matter of fact i just started looking online to learn about PC parts. Any help will be much appreciated.
Thanks a lot

Welcome tohttp://www.pcguide.com/ubb/pcgubb.gif Forums!
fan was kinda workingThe Power Supply Unit's fan...or the CPU fan?
If it is the CPU fan you are referring to, many of the newer boards have an RPM sensor that will shut things down immediately to prevent problems if no RPMs are registering.
However, if the PSU's fans are not turning it would appear to point to a PSU failure... If you have a known working one form another computer that has the same power adapters, you might want to see if that will get things going...

Dear Whyzeman,
thank you for your reply but Yes the PCU fans aren't working! nothing's working. When i turn it on nothing's working, it's daed. Only a green light on the back of the PCU which means there's power going. But nothign else seems working and i don't have another PC at home!! i called HP company they told me you're out of warranty and it will cost you $100 to fix it :( i'm broke. Any help would be much appreciated.
Thank you

Since it has been sitting around for a year and a half you should pick up a can, or two, of compressed air. Clean that thing out before you try to turn it on again. There has to be tons of dust built up on everything. Dust may have frozen the fans up. Depending on how bad it is the bearings on the fans may be seized up beyond repair, but it's hard to say. Like Whyzman said if the fans are not turning then the computer will not start up.
Also for the same reasons reseat all the components. Every cable and card except for the CPU right now. Don't forget to ground yourself by touching a unpainted metal part of the case to discharge any static electricity before handling the mobo and components.
I don't know if that will get it up and running but it's a good place to start and something that should be done regardless.

Hi Balto, well first off plugging and unplugging a computer is not a good thing to do. Doesn't it have a on/off switch or a reset switch???
PSU(Power Supply Unit) should be showing a green light on the back of your tower(case) if any electricity is getting to it. Cleaning is the best option you have now. Was the computer in storage? Did it come out of a cold place maybe? Did you let it warm up to room temp? Was it dropped or jolted hard in it's travels? Maybe humidity, did you let it dry for any length of time? All of these thing affect a computer big time. It could be that you started it up and the CPU (Central Processing Unit) fan failed in that case your chip could have fried in a heartbeat. Even if it does start up after all the plugging and unplugging your HDD and OS could be in a world of trouble.
Considering what might be wrong with it $100 is a cheap price. As jlr said, don't touch anything in the case without grounding yourself. Even static that we can't feel can fry a computer and of course always unplug it from anything before opening a case.
Best of luck, I'm sure the guru's will have some other ideas.

Thank you ladygrey & jlreich,
Well it has been sitting in my bedroom for about 1 year& half, yes when i opened it up, the fan was full of dust like wool, i tried to clean it up from the inside by my girfriend's make up bruch, it's a little one but it helped a bit but not sure of the inside of the fan. I tried to reseat the cards AGP, PCI..but all of them seemed seated & in place. I made a mikstake probably by not using a cardboard ground, i do have a carpet, so i hope i can be lucky & nothing happened :( and yes ladygrey the green light behind the CPU comes on when i plug it in. I use the unplugging because the power button doesn't turn it off ! i remember this a long time ago that the power button doesn't turn it off so i always used Alt+ctrl+delete to turn it off or restart it. I've been told even if the green light comes on behind the CPU doesn't mean power goes inside to the hard drive & fans.. so i don't know but i'm gonna keep trying to clean it up and see what happens.
Thank you all
